"American Idol" Host Rumored to Replace Regis on "Live"

Regis Philbin is leaving "Live with Regis and Kelly," and the Regis replacement rumors are racing. Right now, Ryan Seacrest is in the lead, according to the most vocal opinionates.

The 36-year-old "American Idol" emcee and "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" radio host may be hopping from Fox TV to ABC for the next season to take a seat next to "Live" co-host Kelly Ripa. Apparently, Ryan Seacrest's contract with "American Idol" will be up for renegotiation this year.

Ryan Seacrest, a self-proclaimed Regis Philbin fan, has worked with ABC TV before, hosting "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve," so a network leap may not be such a stretch, after all. What's more, Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa have sampled their on-air chemistry before, co-hosting Disney's Christmas Day Parade on ABC together.

Of course, Ryan Seacrest was also rumored to be a possible replacement for retiring CNN talk show host Larry King, but Piers Morgan nabbed that gig.

What a year for Ryan Seacrest, who is supposedly preparing to drop to one knee and propose marriage to his lady love, 22-year-old country singer and dancer Julianne Hough.

What happened to Regis Philbin?

Regis Philbin recently announced his plans to retire after more than a quarter century on the morning television talk show. The chatty show, previously titled "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee" (when Kathie Lee Gifford appeared with Regis Philbin), has been on the air since the 1980s.

Despite rumors that the congenial co-host (and former emcee of "America's Got Talent" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionnaire") was suffering poor health, Regis Philbin appears simply to be ready to begin a new life chapter. Now 79 years old, Regis Philbin said he will tape his last installment of "Live with Regis and Kelly" in late summer or early fall of 2011.

Regis Philbin has apparently set a Guinness World Record for the most hours on-camera, appearing for more than 16,000 total hours on TV. The veteran television personality will celebrate his 80th birthday on August 25, 2011.

Who else is rumored to replace Regis Philbin on "Live"?

Disney/ABC announced plans to retain the basic format for "Love," simply replacing Regis Philbin choosing his replacement as soon as possible.

Several popular male television personalities have been cited as possible replacements for Regis Philbin on "Live with Regis and Kelly." Rumored Regis replacements include Wayne Brady, Mark Consuelos, Anderson Cooper, Josh Duhamel, Ricky Gervais, Jeff Gordon, Jon Hamm, Neil Patrick Harris, Nick Jonas, Mario Lopez, Cameron Mathison, Jeff Probst, Ryan Seacrest and others.

On air, Regis Philbin jokingly suggested 50 Cent and Lil Wayne as possible future co-hosts with Kelly Ripa.
