Ryder Cup 2010 Results Have USA Back on Top

Robert Dougherty
The Ryder Cup 2010 results are not the big story right now. Yet the 2010 Ryder Cup results have to be decided, whether they are all in by Monday or not. Since the rain has held off thus far today, and since the format has been altered, there is hope that things will get back on track. They have to get in as much as possible today, since rain could return with a vengeance tomorrow and Monday. Therefore, the Ryder Cup results for today are extremely important, in case there isn't much time to rally back.

The Europeans had the early advantage before yesterday's rain delay, but the Americans rallied back before sunset. Today, the first fourball matches finally ended, with the USA winning two of them and halving one, to take a 2 ½-1 ½ point lead into the next session.

The Ryder Cup results in 2010 are now unprecedented, with six foursome matches followed by two fourballs, and four more foursomes. Yet in the opening six foursome format, the Americans extended their advantage, with a 3 ½-2 ½ victory in the session, and a 6-4 lead overall.

Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker easily beat Miguel Angel Jimenez and Peter Hanson, 4 and 3, but Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson lost their second match, by 3 and 2 to Padraig Harrington and Ross Fisher. Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson got a 2 up win over Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, while Matt Kuchar and Stewart CInk finished 1 up against Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

Thus far, the Ryder Cup is looking promising for the Americans, as they only need eight more points to retain the title. Yet the Europeans are set on making a comeback in the next session, and are off to a good start.

Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are already 2 up through three over Woods and Stricker, while McIlory and McDowell lead Johnson and Mahan by 1 up through two. Harrington and Fisher lead Johnson and Jim Furyk by 1 up through four, with Jimenez and Hanson at 1 up through three against Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton. However, Cink and Kuchar are 1 up through one over the Molinaris.

If the rain doesn't overshadow the rest of the weekend and beyond, the Ryder Cup could go right down to the wire - and not just against the Monday sunset. There have already been a few momentum shifts, to go along with those in the weather, leaving plenty of time for a few more.

For now, the golfers are able to focus on each other and not the playing conditions, as they hope to get Day 2 done on time and set up a normal Sunday. The Ryder Cup results can be seen live right now on NBC.
