Sacrament

Jill Davidson
Two become one with heartfelt vows;
Two souls unite to share one life.
They make as one a blessed home
In the eyes of God, as man and wife.

Two paths become one destiny;
Two sweet longings now fulfilled.
The infant lies in their embrace;
A new born life that God has willed.

Man gives himself as sacrifice
As years go by and children thrive.
She makes for all a gracious home
Favored by the One they love.

A treasure found in one beloved;
The wedding song is sung again.
Two are one as they renew
This covenant of God and men.

    The one thing I noticed in the poem(I not sure if it is accurate) is that there seems to be a tension between the words 'one and two'. I think what makes the poem so interesting is that there is a sense that it is not easy for a man and woman to become one , in the sense that God intended. It takes work which does not stop after reciting one's wedding vows. It kind of like a rubber band, tight and together one minute but a moment later so far apart. I think poets are brave, it is a hard thing to try to say so much in a very tight and compress way.
