Library
The local libraries are great places to offer to volunteer in the Sacramento area. I live in Folsom and know that Folsom is always happy to have volunteers at either of its two locations. If you do not live in Folsom though all the libraries in the Sacramento system will be happy to take volunteers. Typically as a volunteer you will help with replacing books but you may also help out with children's activities. If you have experience you may get more duties. Volunteering at a local library can lead to a job at the library one of my friends got a job because of of previous volunteer work. It is easy to volunteer at the Library. Go up to one of the librarians and tell them you are interested in volunteering and they will give you all the information you need to start. The library also offers flexible hours, you can volunteer any amount of time when the library is open.
Hospice
The area has a few hospice locations that you can volunteer at. The Folsom Snowline Hospice is located at 616 East Bidwell, Folsom California. The Cameron Park Snowline Hospice located at 3300 Coach Lane Suite 17 Cameroon Park. Hospice helps out people are are sick and dying to live comfortably until they die. There are a few jobs that you will likely be doing if you volunteer at a Hospice. You might help with pick up of donations, stocking, sorting, or you may be at the cash register. Experience in any of these areas will make you more likely to do that particular job. They do prefer that you be willing to commit to a minimum amount of time each week but will let you choose whatever hours work for you.
California State Railroad Museum
The Train Museum has lots of volunteers but is always happy to have more. Volunteering at the train museum is often something retirees do. The Train Museum is like a job and the longer you help the bigger and sometimes even better job you get. If you are willing to work longer hours you can also get a better job. Also if you have some kind of experience that is related to trains that will help you get a specific job with the Train Museum. The one bad thing about volunteering at the Train Museum is that it can be very demanding and very time consuming. The Train Museum expects a great deal from its volunteers it is like having a real job.
Folsom History Museum
The Folsom History Museum is a much more laid back museum to work at. While you can put in lots of hours if you wish you can also help on occasions. You can help take money or be a docent. There are often times that the museum has special times where they may celebrate events and they like to get volunteers to help out with the larger numbers or even to dress up in costume period. If you can not give regular service the Folsom History Museum is still a great place for volunteer opportunities.
Chamber of Commerce
Your local Chamber of Commerce is a great place to find out about volunteer opportunities. Even if the city does not have any volunteer opportunities the Chamber of Commerce will be able to help you know where you can volunteer. Also some cities such as Folsom regularly have events and often need volunteers for these events and the Chamber of Commerce is the best place to find out about how to volunteer for these events which will only require a day or two of your time.
Church
My own church often has volunteer opportunities. However if you do not belong to a church that does not mean you can not volunteer. When I went to school in Boston I volunteered at a soup kitchen at a Unitarian church even though I was not Unitarian all they required was you show up and they told you what to do and you left when you needed to it was an easy volunteer opportunity. You can either call or go to a local church and ask about what service opportunities they may have.
Any of these volunteer opportunities are great ways to get involved with your community and help make a difference. But you do not need to fill limited to these options any service you can do is great.
