Saddam, from Dictator to Martyr

Saddam's Good-bye Letter

Dee
In a good-bye letter posted on the Internet, Saddam Hussein urged the Iraqi people to embrace "brotherly coexistence," according to the Associated Press. With all appeals exhausted, Hussein could be hanged within the next 30 days.

Saddam's attorney Ghazzawl confirmed to the Associated Press the good-bye letter was indeed written by Saddam on November 5th. The letter was written in his native Arabic but translated by the AP.

"I call on you not to hate because hate does not leave space for a person to be fair and makes you blind and closes all the doors of thinking," Saddam wrote. It also went on to say "I also call on you not to hate the people of other countries that attacked us," and to "Remember that God has enabled you to become an example of love, forgiveness, and brotherly love".

These don't sound like the words of a person who is convicted of ordering murder of 148 Shiite Muslims in Dajail, in 1982. He also put suspected foes to death without trial, waged a war on Iran, and left his nation with bloodshed. Where was his "love" and "forgiveness" then?

In his letter, he also supported the Sunni Arab-dominated insurgency, writing "Long live jihad and the mujahedeen," urging Iraqis to be patient and rely on God's help in fighting "against the unjust nations."

Saddam was quoted "Here I offer my soul to God as a sacrifice, and if he wants, he will send it to heaven with the martyrs."

Another official, stated the execution could take place before the 30 days. Saddam is now in the US in a military prison, Camp Cropper, and will be handed over to Iraqi authorities on the day of execution.

Saddam ended his letter by saying "Dear faithful people, I say good-bye to you, but I will be with the merciful God who helps those who take refuge in him and who will never disappoint any honest believer."

martyr - a person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a religion. saddam was not asked to renounce his religion, therefore is not a martyr. want another definition? ask a priest

While I enjoyed reaing your take on Saddam, I have to remind you that he is no martyr. A martyr willing suffers and Saddam did no such thing. He found it inconceivable that he did anything wrong.
