Saddam Hussein:The Republican's Last Hope

Will the Saddam Verdict Sway the Electorate?

paul angelo
So, it looks as if the Republican's last ditch effort to swindle the American people into re-electing their majority in Congress may be resting squarely on the shoulders of Saddam Hussein.

Coincidentally, good ol' Saddam's trial verdict is scheduled to come down only two days before election day, and we can rest assured that Republicans will be trumpeting the imminent guilty verdict as proof that their glorious occupation of Iraq is going well, and that George W. Bush and his enablers in Congress have been right and noble in defending it.

I'd like to call bullshit right now. Who the hell cares if Saddam is found guilty in some purely symbolic dog & pony trial? Will it bring back the 2,829 dead American troops? Will it revive the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqi's? Will Saddam's guilty verdict rebuild the still devastated country? Will it return the billions of dollars in tax payer dollars sent to the coffers of the war profiteers of this sham reconstruction? Will a guilty Saddam suddenly erase our memories of the lies told in pursuit of the invasion? Will it magically render Dick Cheney and co into valiant heroes, or will they still be chicken-hawk assholes?

Of course not-but Republicans truly believe that the American people are so easily fooled that they will fall for it, unfortunately, in their minds it has worked before. But in order for this plan to work, they are really banking the American mainstream media's reaction to Saddam's inevitable guilty verdict. The media can always be counted upon to send out a message favorable to the power elite, and although there has been somewhat less cooperation of late, this current media establishment has fallen for nearly every talking point and stunt this right wing government has thrown their way. After all, they beat the drums of war pretty well leading into the Iraq invasion, putting up little resistance to the bush administrations questionable case for war-and the list doesn't end there.

So, how will the Saddam verdict be handled this time around? Will it be heralded as some important turning point in this messy and morally reprehensible occupation; similar to the way they treated Saddam's capture and the death of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi? Or will it be treated as the insignificant, symbolic bullshit verdict that it truly is? Hold onto your seats folks…

I think that enough people see now that there is nothing coming from the republicans that can be trusted, that isn't bullshit, that isn't totally aimed at trying to grasp onto the control they sense slipping away. I don't think this last ditch ploy will work.

I get it Greg, you value non-partisanism. But to be truthful, you try to mask it but your articles are quite partisan I think, and I don't write with a desire to remain impartial - I am not a journalist, I write editorial pieces. Regardless, it is the plain truth that Republicans engage in slimy, manipulative politics far, far more than the Dem Party, and my observations of this come through in my writing. But, for the record, I am no lover of the Dem Party. In fact there are only a handful of dems I can stomach, and they are largely marginalized by the power elite of the party. But, one thing I know is that the Republican Party of today is dangerous for America, and thus I write in favor of the Democrats as they are the only hope.

Well, at least the article wasn't full of partisan rhetoric. :)
