Saddest Christmas Memory

Ryan Mims
Usually Christmas is a fun time for me, everyone is happy and people sing Christmas carols and you get free stuff (ha ha). Everyone is jolly and usually in a good mood, even the people that are usually bad tempered or really angry are happier than they usually are.

Well Christmas has been good for me except for one Christmas that I will always remember. I was a little kid and we had a cat named Fuzzy. We had to stop her from playing with the Christmas lights but she was too tempted. Well days went by that Fuzzy would play with the Christmas lights and we would grab her and force her to let go of the lights.

Eventually we started to take drastic measures. We went to the vet and had her de-clawed. That was a fun experience because Fuzzy got so mad at the vet that she took her other paw and scratched him on the cheek. He wasn't angry (surprisingly, I guess that's the Christmas spirit right?) and he continued to de-claw our now really really angry cat.

Once she was de-clawed we brought her home and the was hitting at the Christmas tree lights now. We didn't really worry about that too much and we just ignored it. Then one day my dad saw her chewing at the Christmas tree lights. Obviously we couldn't de-teeth her so we put her in a cage and let her out occasionally but we would put her in the cage every night.

Well one day when we were gone (this was two days before Christmas) we left her out of her cage. So apparently she started chewing on the lights and somehow the needle-catcher rug underneath the tree caught fire. As did Fuzzy.

When we got home we saw smoke coming from inside the house. Luckily we weren't gone for too long so it didn't burn the house down just the tree... And poor Fuzzy.

Now that we've learned that cats like to play with Christmas tree lights we've started setting them higher up in the tree and not letting them hang down. Our new cat wasn't tempted by the lights like Fuzzy was but there is still the chance that he might end up like Fuzzy.

I think that you can learn a lesson from this...

1. Don't let your cats ANYWHERE near your Christmas trees (Or Hannukah candles)
2. Make sure that your cat is in a safe place during the Holidays
3. Have a merry Christmas (no matter what happens)
