"Sadie"

"Sadie"

The sun was shining through the small bedroom window. The smell of bacon was coming from the kitchen. A stern but quiet voice came from in front of the bedroom door. "Get up Sadie, its time to eat." Sadie placed her swollen feet on the floor and began to walk toward the bathroom. She took care of her business and came to the breakfast table. "Sadie, what are you going to do? " "We must know who the father is. You are walking around here big as a tick and eating up everything in sight. It is not fair to me, Jack or the rest of the children." Sadie looked at her mother with tears in her eyes." "I can drop out of school and get a job." Who in their right mind is going to hire a eight months pregnant girl?" besides you are not doing your fair share of work around here. I just don't know what we are going to do." said Sadie's mother.

Sadie was walking down the hall to her first period class, kids staring and snickering at her. She clutched her books tight and proceeded down the hall. Mrs. Jarrod was Sadie's English teacher and she had taken an interest in Sadie. After class she spoke to Sadie for a few moments. "Sadie have you thought about our conversation any further?" "Yes, I have but I don't know what my mother will say." "Well if you would like my husband and I could come over tonight and speak with the both of you." "No, Mrs. Jarrod not tonight, please let me mention it to my mother first. "Sadie walked away to her next class. When Sadie went home that afternoon she waited patiently for her mother to arrive. Her mother came through the door exhausted from cleaning houses all day. "Sadie is the dinner cooked?" "Yes, mama." "Have the other children eaten?" "Yes, mama?" "Where is Jack?" asked Sadie's mother. "He's drunk in the bedroom."replied Sadie." I know you do not like Jack, but he is good to me and he helps me keep food on the table." "Mama I really need to talk with you." "Girl can I get in the house good and get me something to eat?" "Yes, mama."

After her mother finished her meal, Sadie came to clear the table. "Come and sit down and talk to me. What is troubling you girl?" "Mama, Mrs. Jarrod wants to come by and talk with you." "About what? " asked Sadie's mother. "She and her husband can not have children, and they want to adopt my baby." "Well, we certainly can't afford another mouth to feed and you still will not tell who the father of the baby is, but at the same time it is hard to give up a baby after carrying a human life for nine months. Well, Sadie you got into this mess so I will let you figure it out." "When is she coming?" asked Sadie's mother. "I need to get back with her tomorrow to find out."

Sadie made her way to school the next morning. Mrs. Jarrod came into the class with a warm smile. "Good morning class." she cheered. Please take out your English book and turn to page....at that time Sadie threw up all over the desk. There was a long silence and then Mrs. Jarrod broke the tension. "Sadie let me help you." said Mrs. Jarrod. Sadie jumped up and ran out of the classroom as the whole class blurted out a big laugh. "Class that was not funny, show your classmate some empathy. Johnny go find the janitor."

After class Sadie came back and apologized to Mrs. Jarrod. "No dear you do not owe me an apology that is part of having a life growing inside of you. " "Speaking of that," said Sadie "can you please come to my house tomorrow night?" "Yes! yes we can." said Mrs. Jarrod.

Sadie made her way home and warmed up some leftovers for the other children. She tided up the three bedroom apartment. She heard the key in the door as she looked up to see her tired mother. "Mother I told you tonight is the night Mrs. Jarrod and her husband is coming!" Yes, I know girl calm down." Sadie's mother went to freshen up before the company arrived. At 7:00pm sharp there was a knock at the door. "Who is it?" asked Sadie. "Mr. and Mrs. Jarrod. Sadie opened the door with her eyes fixed on the floor. "Come in." said Sadie.

Mrs. Jarrod started off the conversation by speaking to Sadie's mother. "We thank you both for allowing us to come tonight." "Have a seat." said Sadie's mother. "My husband and I have been trying for eight years to start a family, but we have been unsuccessful. The doctors have not been able to find anything wrong, but still we do not have any children. My husband and I would love to adopt Sadie's baby so that she can continue her education." "Well, I thought about it and I think it would be a great idea." said Sadie's mother. "Sadie is my oldest child and I always told her she needs to set an example for the others. No one in my family has ever graduated high school and if I can get her out of here she will have a chance to make something out of herself and not end up like me." "Oh mama." replied Sadie as if she was embarrassed. Mr. Jarrod asked Sadie, "How do you feel about it?" Sadie cleared her throat and stated, "Well, it will hurt to give my baby up, but I know that the both of you will be ale to offer this child much more that I can. Will I be able to see the baby sometimes?" "Sadie, I was hoping that you would make a clean break, because I know at first it will be hard, but I feel that as time goes by it will be a little easier." stated Mrs. Jarrod. "OK I guess I can understand that." said Sadie. "My husband and I will pay your hospital bills.

Four weeks had passed and it was time for Sadie to deliver. It was on a Saturday so she called Mrs. Jarrod. "I'm on my way Sadie." Sadie's mother's boyfriend Jack stayed with the children. Sadie's mother also went with her to the hospital. Sadie's delivery went very well, within five hours Sadie had a 7lb baby boy. Mrs. Jarrod called her husband immediately whom was working out of town. She cried out,"IT'S A BOY!" Meanwhile Sadie was placed in a room and the baby was brought in. Sadie's mother looked at the baby in horror. "Sadie, that baby looks like Jack." "You finally figured it out mama." replied Sadie.
