Sadie Wins Best of Show at Westminster Kennel Dog Club Show 2010

Is a Scottie a Good Addition to Your Family?

Catherine Spencer
The 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden gave the title of Best in Show to a Scottish Terrier, "Sadie," on February 16, 2010. The champion, Sadie, AKA Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot, has been one of my favorites while watching dog shows the past couple of years. Her frisky personality makes her fun to watch as she proudly prances around the show ring with her tail wagging. Sadie and her handler, Gabriel Rangel, appeared on the Early Show this morning to talk about her big win at Westminster. Sadie did not seem to be affected by the new title.

Sadie is owned by Amelia Musser of Mackinac Island, Michigan. She is the eighth Scottish Terrier to win at Westminster since the dog show began in 1877. This Best in Show is Sadie's 112th best in show win. Sadie is one little black beauty to be reckoned with!

With Sadie's win as Best in Show at Westminster, the Scottish Terrier breed will undoubtedly see a rise in popularity. Before adopting a Scottish Terrier into your family you need to research this dog breed to see if it will be a good addition to your family.

The Scottish Terrier, commonly known as Scotties, is a small, powerful dog with well-developed hunting and digging instincts. Scottish Terriers were originally bred to rid highland farms from underground predators. They are independent dogs with a stubborn streak and can be snappy if not trained well. With good training a Scottish Terrier will make a loyal, faithful pet. They act better with older children. They are an energetic dog who loves to play ball and chase things. Grooming, socialization, training, and supervision with small children are special needs of the Scottish Terrier that owners need to consider.

Sadie was chosen as Best in Show from 2500 purebred dogs entered in Westminster this year! One hundred-seventy-three breeds and varieties of purebred dogs strutted their stuff. Next year, in 2011, six more breeds will be allowed in the Westminster competition: the Bluetick coonhound (official mascot for Tennessee), Redbone coonhound, Boykin Spaniel (official state dog of South Carolina), Icelandic Sheepdog, Cane Corso and the Leonberger. It can be years before a dog breed is invited to attend Westminster. It takes a sufficient population and distribution of the dog breed in the United States, a solid parent club that oversees the registry, and a precise standard on the breed's ideal dog.

Congratulations to the Great Scottie, Sadie, winner of the Best in Show at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show 2010!

I was happy for her win, again. My two goofy Scotties sat out in the rain today barking at a calf across the street. They must have thought it was the black lab from next door. Too funny. Thank you for this report. I found you on This, That, and the other... today. Congratulations.

I have always loved Scotties, but I am not a dog person, so I will stick with my cat!
