Safe Auto Insurance: Great Company or Rip Off Artists?

Angela Russell
Safe Auto Insurance advertises minimum coverage for minimum prices. If you live in the south you have, no doubt, been exposed to their television commercials. They have a catchy jingle that incorporates the company's telephone number. They advertise low price insurance and their motto is: "We keep you legal for less"

In February I decided to swap my auto insurance and called Safe Auto for a quote. The customer service representative was very personable and seemed to know her job well. She asked the required questions about my husband and my driving records and put me on hold while she prepared the quote. When she returned to the line she gave me a price that was less than others that I had been quoted, with a down payment that wasn't outrageous and the monthly payments were very affordable.

My policy began on February 18, 2007. I was asked questions by Safe Auto that I was not asked by other insurance agencies. Questions like, "Do you or your spouse take any medications daily?" When I responded that my husband did have a prescription medication that he took once per day, she informed me that this medication was on her "list" and that we would need to obtain a statement from his doctor stating that he was fit to drive. The required paperwork was to be sent to me and then, according to her, faxed to our physician to be filled out. We received the paperwork, which I promptly forwarded to my husbands physician. We received a response that if we wanted this paperwork filled out that we would need to make an appointment to see the doctor. This was a little irritating to my husband, as he would have to take a day off of work, make an appointment with the doctor, pay for a doctor's visit, not to mention sitting in that waiting room. It seemed that this insurance company that promised lower prices was going to end up costing us money. The receptionist for our physician set up the earliest possible appointment, which was a month away.

During the interim, I received a statement from Safe Auto saying my premium had been raised nearly $100.00 per month because of something on my driving record. It did not state what that something was, so I made a phone call to inquire what could have raised my payment that much. The representative seemed perplexed after I asked her what could cause my rate to increase so much, she informed me that an accident that I had in 2004 had actually happened on March 13th, on the paperwork, it stated March 1st. I informed the representative that when these questions were asked I could not remember the exact date of the accident and that the person taking my information took it upon herself to enter a date of the 1st. Even if it were 12 days after the entered date, is that a reason to raise my premium nearly $100.00? Looking at the information, I asked the representative how long incidents remained on a driving record, her answer, three years. So, this accident that happened three years prior, minus a few days, would be removed from my driving record completely with-in a thirty day period. I asked her if 12 days made that much of a difference, how much difference would it make when it was removed altogether. She couldn't answer the question, but said that the 12 day date difference should not have caused that much of a rate increase. She stated that most people didn't remember the exact dates they had accidents or received citations. She said she would be forwarding my information to another department for review, and assured me that my rate would drop to what I had originally been quoted.

While I was on the phone with her, I informed her that the physician's statement would be sent in after the doctors appointment, but that it would be nearly a month before he could get in to see the doctor. She said she would note my account with that information and that I didn't need to be concerned with cancellation.

Not long after this, I received a cancellation notice in the mail. My policy was to be canceled because they had not received the physician's notification of fitness. I had 7 days from the date of the letter to get the statement faxed to them. My husband's appointment was two days before the cancellation date luckily.

Once we had the physician's statement I called them to request their fax number. While on the phone I questioned my rate reduction. The representative acted as if I were from another planet. She had no idea of what I was talking about. I explained it all to her again. By this date, the incident on my record should have been removed completely. She curtly advised me that they would only run my driving record every six months and that I would be required to pay the increased rate until they ran the record again.

Sometimes it's really difficult to hold your tongue. You have to remember that these people you are speaking to are, in fact people, they are not the company. I wanted to scream, yell, and stomp my feet, but I got the distinct impression that it would have done no good. I am canceling my policy and will be going with another company, a local company, so that if I have an issue, I can march right into their office, speak my peace, and have them look me in the eye to tell me I need to pay $100.00 more per month because of a date error.

Safe Auto Insurance Company should be ashamed of itself. This is a crooked practice. I certainly hope that no one else has been scammed by these people. I will be checking with the Better Business Bureau to find out what my options are. People cannot allow themselves to be taken advantage of.

I was struck by a Safe Auto insured driver. The police report clearly stated the other drive at fault. I have waited now three months and dozens of phone calls and still no payment. All I can say is DO NOT sign-up for this company given all the comments I've seen and if you are in an accident with a Safe Auto insured driver -- ABANDON ALL HOPE!

A judge ordered Safe Auto Insurance to pay $11.7 million in damages to about 180 current and former sales representatives whose commissions were wrongfully slashed by the company.

Some of the sales representatives, split between call centers in Columbus and Monroe County in eastern Ohio, stand to gain $100,000 or more from the ruling yesterday, say those involved in the case.

The total could top $14million if Judge Julie Selmon of Monroe County Common Pleas Court finds that the sales representatives are entitled to interest on the $11.7million.

The sales representatives sold insurance policies to drivers who contacted the Columbus-based company for coverage designed to help them meet minimum-coverage standards.

The sales representatives sued the company in 2007, seeking to recover commissions and bonuses that they argued they were owed after the company made a series of cuts in commissions over several years.

The company declined to comment on the ruling other than to sa

Hey Stephanie R.,I wish I had read this site before calling Safeauto. I am stuck with the cancellation fees too, plus she told the all the red-tape I have to go through to cancel! The Customer service rep was rude. She said I couldn't stop my payment after 24hrs which hadn't come out of the bank yet I just put a stop payment on it ($35.00) and them read off all the fees!!!! Also, I thought I was getting full coverage...I was in a hurry online to get insurance-but they're too high and I wanted to go with my prevoius insurers, but I have learned my lesson!!!! BE CAREFUL and read all the fine print. I am calling BBB too

Safe Auto is a rip off. When I started my policy, I was only informed that cancelling the policy would forfeit the application fee of $25, what they didn't say was that there was a $25 cancellation fee as well. They just hustled me out of $50, and now I'm ready to call the Better Business Bureau!!!

How the employees at this place can sleep at night is beyond me. After my granddaughter's car was totaled by a Safe Auto insured (85 yrs.old)they offered her just a small amount of money for a settlement. What a nightmare this was for her and what horrible people she had to deal with. This was not her fault and they made her life a living hell. Hope no one else has to go through this. I feel the only way you get to these sort of people is having money to fight the battle. What a shame!

My ordeal has been as bad if not worse. I am still in the midst of a three long debate on why they are not coving my uninsured motorist claim. I am minutes away from calling an attorney. Anyone thinking of buying into their fake commercials needs to steer the other way.

Safe Auto is a rip-off. I paid for 6 months and they cancelled me after 3 months and will not refund my money. If they aren't covering me then they should give back my money.

Wait until you have an accident with a Safe Auto insured. 6 Weeks ago a Safe Auto insured ran a red light and hit me in the side totaling my vehicle. They had some jack-leg appraiser come out and appraise the damage to my car. It was totaled. The other driver was sighted with three moving violations and he even admitted to the officer that he had run the red light. Clearly his fault! Safe Auto started out with an offer that was so insulting that had that person been in front of me and of male gender it would have been on. The lady (Barb) stated that there was preexisting damage. I challenged that by stating there was no damage to my car until their insured ran a red light and hit me. I requested to deal with a supervisor. After talking to the supervisor (Kim), she stated there was a problem with the cover sheet and the appraisal (conflicting information). After it was determined there was NO preexisting damage to my car they stood by their previous offer. My Insurance State Farm has

I CALLED SAFE AUTO AT 7:00 AM, I GAVE THEM MY ACCOUNT NUMBER AND THE CHECK NUMBER TO START MY INS. WELL I GOT TO WORK AND SOMEONE TOLD ME ABOUT ANOTHER COMPANY. I THEN CALLED THE OTHER COMPANY AND DECIDED TO GO WITH THEM INSTEAD. SO I CALLED SAFE AUTO BACK, AND TRIED TO CANCEL MY POLICY. KEEP IN MIND THIS IS ALL IN ONE DAY. THE LADY AT SAFE AUTO CANCELLED MY POLICY AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD STILL DEDUCT THE 190.00 FOR THE 15TH OF FEBRUARY BECAUSE THEY HAD FAXED ME THE POLICY. I HAD DONE A CHECK BY PHONE SO I CALLED THE BANK AND STOPPED PAYMENT. WELL ON FEB. 15TH, THE 190.00 CAME OUT ANY WAY, SO I WAS NOW OVERDRAWN, BECAUSE YOU CANNOT STOP AN ACH DEBIT!!!! NOT TO MENTION I HAD OTHER CHECKS ABOUT TO COME THROUGH!! SO NOW I AM LOOKING AT 400.00 IN CHECK OVERDRAFTS AND NSF FEES. I TRIED TO GET SAFE AUTO TO DEPOSIT THE MONEY BACK AND THEY SAID NO THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CHECK TO BE MAILED WHICH COULD TAKE UP TO 30 DAYS... YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK TWICE
