The slinky is on old favorite, and has been safe for kids since 1945. It makes a great stocking stuffer. Recommended for ages 5and up, learning to use it does take a couple of days, I recommend purchasing two in case the first one is destroyed in the learning process. The price is very reasonable with the original metal slinky costing only $6.00. For more stocking stuffer ideas, look for other toys like the Yomega yo-yo, ROYTOY log building sets, and Jacobs Ladder.
Furniture and Kitchens can be on the more expensive side where Christmas gifts are concerned, but they are durable and last for many years, or even generations. Little Colorado has every miniature piece of furniture, playhouse, rocking chair, vanity, and more that you can imagine. The items can come in natural wood finish, or they may be pre-painted. You can order your item online, or find them in some local stores and places that sell natural wood furniture.
Airplanes and gliders can be purchased at your local craft store. They usually call for the parent to team up the child to get the toy functional, making it a great bonding experience and memory in addition to an awesome holiday gift for a child.
Little Tikes makes great safe inflatable and plastic toys for kids. You can purchase a full kitchen for $79.00, an inflatable playhouse for $99.00, or a plastic workshop for 69.00. My favorite Little Tikes toy is the Cozy Coupe, which is a little read and yellow car for children approximately 2-4 years old. They also have trucks and tricycles your child can graduate into.
Girls will have to cuddle up to stuffed animals this year since many favorite dolls are made overseas (American Girl, Barbie, etc) and many clothing and accessory items of these dolls have been recalled. Safe stuffed animals to purchase include Vermont Teddy Bear, Hugg-A-Planet, Basic Brown Bear Factory, Big Plush, and Stuffington Bear company.
In short, to ensure that the gifts you purchase for your children this year are non-toxic and lead-free, look for toys made in America. Still made in USA.com, has an exhaustive guide for you.
