Even though there are many people who will be out drinking and dancing at parties and clubs getting ready to ring in the New Year, there will be just as many looking for activities that are more subdued, do not involve alcohol, or are safe for families to attend.

Call your local Chamber of Commerce or search the internet for family friendly activities in your town. Columbia, Missouri, for instance holds an event called First Night downtown every year. This event, which is $8.00 for those eight years of age and over before December 31st and $10.00 at the door, will have a variety of entertainment. Families can watch over 75 performers, including bands, storytellers and magicians. The event begins at 6 PM and ends at midnight with fireworks. There is even a fireworks show at 9:15 for those with children who cannot stay up until midnight but do not want to miss out on the fun.

First Night is an event found in many cities across the United States and is spreading internationally. You can visit http://www.firstnight.com to see if your city, or a city near you, has a First Night event.

If First Night is not available in your area you may also check with your local churches which may be holding New Year's Eve celebrations. Churches may also hold parties for teenagers so that they have a safe place to go for a party.

The best way to ensure a safe New Year's Eve for you and your family is by holding a celebration or party at your home. You can throw a party for your family and friends or just do something for you and your children.

Have the kids help you make an "Appetizer Dinner", a meal solely made up of appetizer. This meal can be eaten in front of the TV while you wait for the ball to drop or can be snacked on all night while you play games together.

New Year's Eve does not have to involve alcohol and you and your family can still ring in the New Year in a safe and fun environment for you and your children.
