Pets and Halloween costumes don't really go hand-in-hand. Most pets don't even like wearing a Halloween costume to begin with, and even if you can manage to get a costume successfully on your pet, you have to worry about them chewing on it, getting tangled in it, or being so frightened that they just take off. Never fear, there are a few Halloween costume ideas you can use for your pets that are both safe and easy to apply to your pet.
How about a Halloween-inspired collar? Dogs and cats alike can wear a Halloween collar (make sure it's not too loose or too tight) with reflective material in them for safety and festivity. Halloween collars can be purchased in the pet costume aisle of your local pet stores, and are a quick and easy safety costume option for Halloween!
You can make homemade face paint which is safe to put on dogs and cats and dries quickly (see Homemade Halloween Paint to see how you can make your own) or you can simply put some glitter in a hair spray bottle and spray glitter on your pet away from their eyes for a quick and easy Halloween costume for your pet. This is especially great for white or lighter colored pets, and wipes off quickly and easily with a wet wipe.
You can buy a harness for any size dog or cat and then tie a bow or attach a stuffed animal to to the top of it. This way, you can safely restrain your dog or cat and have a stuffed animal look as if it is 'riding' on top of your pet. Or a bow tied to the top of the harness will not unravel and irritate your pet or allow them to get tangled up in it.
Don't ever place your dog or cat in a costume if they don't want to be in one, and make sure the costume they are wearing, no matter how simple, is free of elastic or excessive pieces and parts. Never let your pet out of your sight while they are wearing their Halloween costume, and keep in mind pet safety at all times.
