Through a government program, SafeLink has joined up with Lifeline. For anyone unfamiliar with Lifeline it is a medical alert program for the elderly and the disabled. Through Lifeline and the government, SafeLink is now able to offer the underprivileged a chance to have cellular service without bills.
I know you have to be wondering what the catch is. I did and that was why I decided to try SafeLink out myself. The first thing I did was go to SafeLink.com and put in my zip code. I was than taken to a new page that allowed me to apply.
Similar to most companies, the first step was to put in my basic information that consisted of my name, address, etc. The next page was in regards to any state services I get. If you get food stamps, Medicaid, cash assistance, social security, SSI, or any other state benefits you automatically qualify for the SafeLink Wireless phone service.
If, by chance, you are not a state recipient it will ask you for your income. My son gets SSI so we automatically qualified for the SafeLink Wireless cell phone so the final step for me was to wait. I had figured I would wait one, two, or even three weeks before receiving my new cell phone. I will admit I was rather surprised when I received it three days later in the mail.
Now I have my free LG cell phone but what about minutes for my new TracFone. SafeLink automatically gives all customers 68 free minutes per month in the state of Michigan. If you reside outside of the state of Michigan your free minutes may be slightly higher or lower. Now I have new cell phone and minutes so I gave it a try and it does work!
Your SafeLink phone will automatically update your minutes once a month for five years. However, this sounds all great and it is but there is a catch. First, you are only allowed one SafeLink phone per house. The second catch is if you run through your minutes you either have to wait until the next month or buy additional minutes.
If you are a low income family or you are receiving state benefits you are eligible for a free SafeLink phone. In today's day and age, everyone has a cell phone. So if you are like me and already have one may I suggest a early Christmas present? TracFone's are a great gift not only for yourself but for a child to carry on them. The added benefit is you now have the security to stay in touch and you will not have to worry about that extra bill each month.
