Safely Lighting an Advent Wreath Without Fire

Safely Lighting an Advent Wreath Without Fire - Advent wreaths often signal the beginning of the Christmas & holiday season. The first day of advent is the Sunday closest to the date of November 30, a day of feast in honor of St. Andrew the Apostle. Runs a course of four Sundays, because advent starts on a different date each year the length that it runs may vary as well. Key to the Advent devotion ceremony lies the Advent wreath. Advent wreaths are normally lit with four candles, three are purple and one is rose-colored. The fifth candle used is normally white and would be placed in the center of the Advent wreath on Christmas Eve celebrate the the birth of baby Jesus. Here are five safe lighting ideas that don't require fire, that you can use for your Advent wreath this holiday season.

1. LED Candles,a web search for LED Battery Taper Candles on Google.com will provide you with online sources for LED candles. A company called Carlon makes flameless LED taper candles in several colors and sizes but does not manufacture purple or rose colored flameless candles. White, red and green candles are available at http://flamelesscandles.net and many other local retailers and online stores. These candles could be adapted for use in Advent wreaths by painting or otherwise embellishing them for example wrapping them in purple ribbon.

2. Glow sticks, glow sticks are available in many sizes and colors. For this application ones we're interested in are the miniature glow sticks. You could take normal wax candles and hollow out the tips carefully so as to avoid breaking the candle and insert the glow sticks. This procedure will take some care and could be messy if you choose to melt out the wax with a soldering iron or other hot metal object. Unfortunately these glow sticks will not flicker the way that traditional candles or LED candles do but the cool colors they do emit may help interest children in the Advent wreath.

3. Electric candles can also be used, you can find a variety of electric candles at local stores or online. A quick web search found some Celebrations Brand Electric Candles at AceHardware.com for $3.49. Electric candles as the name suggests plug into a normal AC outlet.

4. EL wire, if you want a really over-the-top Christmas Advent wreath consider creating your own Advent wreath and incorporating electroluminescent wire from thatscoolwire.com. This new low-voltage wire is non-toxic, cool to the touch and produces a glowing neon effect when connected to the required electroluminescent inverter.

5. Battery powered glowing sticks or glowing finger lights found at uglowlites.com may also be retrofitted to act as candles in your Advent wreath.

Making a convincing Advent wreath without using actual flame will take a bit of work and creativity. Hopefully these suggestions give you some ideas that you can use in your Advent wreath this year and avoid the risks associated with actual flame candles burning in your home.
