Safer Sex All About Condoms and Dental Dams

If a person is sexually active, it is highly recommended that they engage in safer sex practices, in order to avoid contracting an STD, AIDS or unwanted pregnancy. Two of the most popular methods are using condoms and/or dental dams.

A condom is a thin rubber tube which fits over a man's erect penis before intercourse. When the man orgasms and ejaculates he does so into the condom, which blocks the sperm from entering the vagina. Condoms are usually made of latex, though they make ones that aren't latex for those who are allergic, and are considered by most the most effective method of protection. Although condoms are a successful method of protection they are only about 95% effective, truly the only method of safer sex is abstinence.

Before using the condom, be sure to check for rips or tears, and check to see how old the condom is. You should never keep a condom in a tight, hot space such as a wallet or pocket, or have it under any direct sunlight. After checking to be sure the condom is not outdated and safe to use, squeeze the tip to release any air pockets and roll the condom down the base of the penis. Females, be sure that fingernails, rings or other jewelry does not rip the condom. Males, after orgasm, be sure you hold the base of the condom during withdrawal from your partner. A few other important things to remember are: never use a condom more then once, if you are using lubricants always use water based ones, remember to use a latex condom for the most effective prevention of STDs, and you can double up condoms during particularly vigorous sex.

Some couples complain that condoms are a problem, as you have to interrupt foreplay to put it on. Oftentimes people will be lost in the moment and not want to stop what they are doing, forgetting to practice safer sex. Instead of viewing it in this manner, put the condom on together, during foreplay, spice it up a bit if you can. Another benefit to using condoms is the varied brands and types they have to choose from. There are condoms available in different flavors, sizes and some that have special bumps or ridges to increase pleasure during intercourse. Condoms do not have to be a hassle or a dread when having sex, indeed they can be a way to not only practice safer sex but increase enjoyment for both people, so shop around until you find the brand that is right for you.

A dental dam is similar to a condom, but used for a different purpose. A dental dam is a small piece of latex which serves as a barrier between the vagina or anus and the mouth. The use of dental dams is popular with lesbian couples, but should also be used between heterosexual couples when having oral sex. If you are in a bind and wish to have oral sex but do not have a dental dam, you can cut a condom and use that instead.

Dental dams are not by any means a difficult method of protection. It can also add a little spice to your sex life, and though some people may be afraid the latex will lessen sensations, that is not true. Some sensations may be a bit different, but if you are practicing safer sex, a dental dam is a necessity.

Even though some may view condoms and dental dams as encumbrances or hassles, they are highly proven methods of protection from STD's, infections, and pregnancy. You need to take care of you and your partner's body when having sexual relations, and be mindful of the risks you take when you do not practice safer sex.
