Safest Cities in America - Violent Crime Rates

J.C. Grant
This article ranks the safest cities in America by violent crime rates per 1,000 inhabitants. For purposes of these rankings, "cities" are incorporated municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, and "violent crime rates" are the sum of each city's murders/manslaughters, forcible rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults divided by the population then multiplied by 1,000.

As set forth below, the twenty-five safest cities in America are located in just thirteen states: six in New Jersey, three in Massachusetts, two each in Connecticut, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Utah, and one each in California, Idaho, Indiana, New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington.

I guess that's what happens when your cities are primarily white.

  • Sheryl Young11/29/2010

Wow - NJ often gets a bad rap. This is surprising.

  • Abby Greenhill11/28/2010

This list almost makes NJ sound like a good place.

I see a common thread here - populations hovering around 25,000. That seems to be a number that represents a town that has a relatively lower crime rate. Interesting stuff. cheers :)

Interesting list...some of them surprised me.
