Safest Cities in the United States

Olivia Cummings
There are many reasons why people move to a new city. Job transfer, entirely new job, school, or perhaps you are just looking to get a fresh start. When looking for a new home town many factors can enter into the decision on where to settle down with your family. Schools, cost of new homes and the job market are just a few. Another major consideration is the safety of the community. Forbes recently put out a list of the safest cities in the United States, and some of the cities, and certainly their place in the rankings, are very surprising.

The rankings were based on several criteria. Where the city or municipal area ranking in violent crime, workplace deaths, traffic deaths and natural disaster were combined to get an overall safety ranking. Forbes listed the 40 safest places to live in the United States. Ranking very high on the list were the areas or Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton which had the lowest violent crime rating of any metropolitan area. Minneapolis-St. Paul - Bloomington had the lowest number of workplace fatalities, making it the safest place to work in the country. The metropolitan area with the least number of traffic deaths was Boston-Cambridge-Quincy. So these cities are the least violent, safest place to work, and safest place to drive in the country. Good news for each of these communities, but did any of them top the list of the safest places to live?

Here are the tope 10 safest metropolitan areas in the USA. At number 10 there is a tie between Denver-Aurora and Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor. Coming in at number 9 was Cincinnati-Middletown. A surprise at number 8 is New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island. For number 7 we travel out west to California where San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara comes in as the only California location in the top 10. We go back east for number 6 which is Providence-New Bedford-Fall River. There is no number 5 as there is a tie for the 4th spot on our list.
