Violent crime rates, published annually by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are the sum of each state's murder/manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault rates, all of which are set out in the rankings that follow. These rankings also include the three cities/towns (pop. > 10,000) in each state with the lowest violent crime rates per 1,000 inhabitants.
Among the ten safest states in America, three are located in New England, three in the Midwest, three in the West, and one in the South.
