Safety Issues for Home Health Aides
The Safety of the Patient is in the Hands of the Home Health Aide
Fire Prevention
Since home health aides often deal with patients with limited mobility, one of the safety issues you need to be aware of is fire prevention. It may become the responsibility of the nursing assistant to ensure there are working fire alarms in the home and that there is no risk of fire from cooking, smoking, fireplaces or appliances.
Slip and Fall
Home health aides may need to help patients in moving around the home and in the bathroom. Aides should ensure there is nothing on the floor or in the area which may cause the patient to slip and fall, such as wet tiles or things accumulated on the ground.
Environmental Safety
Home health aides will also need to ensure that the patient's environment is clean. There are a number of health risks which come from inadequate temperature control in the home.
Food Safety
Home health aides need to make sure the patient is following the prescribed diet and that the food in the home is both adequately refrigerated and disposed of.
Home Safety
Since patients may be alone at times and unable to defend themselves, it may be the role of the home health aide to educate the family and to make sure that there are adequate locks, peepholes, or burglar alarms in the homes of patients.
