Safety Pin Tank Top

Scarf and Pin Shirt

Do you own a silk or other type of scarf that you really don't wear anymore? Are you in need of a shirt more than a scarf? Cool, because they are one and the same. Take a large scarf and you can easily - and I do mean easily - turn it into a stylish, summer tank top that you'll love. Besides the scarf all you need is some safety pins. You're not going to pin the scarf to make it fit; you'll be using the pins as the straps for the tank top!

You'll love a most adorable tank top made from a single silk scarf and a handful of safety pins. Although you could use ordinary safety pins - in a silver color - you have many more choices. Safety pins are now available in gold, blue, red, and other colors.

It's up to you the size of safety pins you want to use. A good size is the two-inch type, since they will require less pins than if you use really tiny ones. And, you can use larger safety pins but bulky pins can sometimes be uncomfortable while wearing the tank top.

To make the shirt, lay it out on a flat surface. If there is an obvious right and wrong side to the scarf, lay it so that the wrong side is facing upwards. With one side of the scarf facing you, take the two corners near you, and fold them down so that they meet. That will leave you with a point at your end. Fold the point down and you're ready to start pinning.

At the fold of the point, go to the corners of the fold, and put one safety pin in each corner. Then, begin attaching more safety pins to those to create the straps. Make each strap the same length then bring the two pin straps together, and use one safety pin to secure the two end pins.

From the last safety pin, begin hanging more, so that you create a strap to go down the middle of your back. When this strap is long enough, bring the two sides of the scarf together, and slightly overlap them. Place the final safety pin into the overlapped area to secure.

The silk scarf and safety pin tank top is cute with shorts or jeans. You can also make other versions of the top. For example, cut the straps off of an existing tank top and replace them with safety pins. No matter which version you make you'll love wearing the cool and breezy design.
