Safety Tips for ATM Machine Users

Keep Your Funds & Self Safe at the ATM

Lou Lou
Most of us use ATMS for quick cash when the bank is closed or when we want to skip the hassle of the drive-thru. It can quickly become convenient and a way of life for some. It is so much easier to drive or walk up to the ATM and debit your account as well as check your balance. The down side is that ATMs are not as secure as bank lobbies or drive thru teller service.

To help keep yourself and your funds safe, here are a few tips.

Prepare your deposits in advance if you use the ATM for this service. Don't stand outside the ATM to get your deposit slip and checks or cash in order. Early preparation will save time and keep you out of the spotlight for criminals. You will want to keep your receipts for transactions for your bank statement balancing.

As with any public venture, you should be aware of your surroundings. Try to see around all sides of the ATM. If you can't, drive around the facility and check for freaks that may be lurking. Also, look for other customers or cars in the area. It is best to have someone accompany you on your trip. If you do happen to see something out of the ordinary, leave the area immediately. There may be loitering around the ATM or other suspicious activity. If so, call the bank or local police department.

While you are at the machine, guard your Personal Identification Number (PIN) as if it were a National Treasure. If a stranger walks up and offers help, refuse it. It is street smart not to walk up to the ATM if another customer is using it. When you are trying to take out money, you don't want any weirdos around and it also common courtesy to respect others' privacy and security if they are at the ATM first.

Drive-up ATMs are common as well. It is best to keep your doors and windows locked, except for the drivers side window. Also, keep your car running and watch your mirrors for activity in the rear-view.

Many of us like the convenience of dropping by the ATM before a night out. If this applies to you, make sure the area and parking lot are well lighted. If you happen to notice poor lighting, you may want to try another better lighted location as well as report the lighting issue to bank personnel.

When you have completed your ATM transactions, make sure you have received your receipt. Double check for your cash, deposit slip, and your purse or wallet. Don't leave any remnants of your visit for crooks that search for account information or personal identity markers.

Along with convenience of technology comes risks so be sure to stay safe.

I did not realize banks still had drive thru service. When I lived in NJ 12 years ago there were some, but in CA it has been a lot longer since any existed - at least in Los Angeles city limits.
