Safety Tips in Using the ATM: Avoiding ATM Theft and Robbery

Heide Lynne Canlas
Bank clients who use the automated teller machine or the ATMs are one of the target victims of robbers and thieves. This is especially so if the client is withdrawing from an ATM.

In using an ATM, one must be extra careful and watchful to avoid being victims of these kinds of crimes. Below are helpful suggestions on how we can prevent ATM and banking crimes from being committed against us.

Avoid using the ATM at night. Society's bad elements and criminals can take advantage of the dark to commit their crimes. As oppose to the night, the bright daylight can serve as a deterrent to the commission of a crime. The danger of being spotted by other people when doing the act or when fleeing from the scene is higher at daytime that they have to observe extra care from being spotted, thus making it more difficult for them to go on with their bad deeds. Also, the bright light can make the task of identifying the culprit easier unlike when it is night and dark.

Choose the location of the ATM you are using. Avoid ATM's located in dark and isolated places. The same rational as in the use of ATM at night applies to using the ATM in the dark. In addition to this, isolated ATMs attract robbers and thieves because there are lesser people to witness the crime and identify the culprit. Aside from these, there are few people who can hear your plea of help or lend you assistance when such crime happens. More so, you may also want to avoid using ATMs in a very busy location because the robber may blend in the crowd and catch you unaware.

Choose enclosed ATM. This will prevent you from being surprised while or after doing your transaction. When inside the enclosure, lock the door to avoid people from entering. Before unlocking the door, check if it is already safe to go outside. Make sure that you are finished doing everything you have to do such as keeping the receipt or money securely in your bag or pocket before unlocking the door and going out.

After your transaction, leave the location immediately. Do not count your money in front of or near the ATM. After taking your money from the machine, keep it immediately, then leave. Count it somewhere else where it is safe. If there is any discrepancy, just report it to the bank over the counter or using a telephone.

Always be alert. Be wary of any suspicious character that might be lurking around. Appraise the environment to see if there is any danger. If you see or sense something suspicious, postpone using the ATM.
