Safety Tips for Virtual World Relationships

Carrie Lowe
For many people, the lure of virtual worlds is just far too great to stay away from. The thrill of creating something in a 3D format, putting it up for sale or even meeting people from all around the world can find you quickly pulled in. However, you should still remember that just because you cannot actually see the person that you are interacting with physically, they can still create problems for you if you are not careful. Taking some steps to protect yourself, as well as your family is extremely important and will help to ensure your virtual world experiences are positive.

Never give out your "real life" or personal information. This includes phone numbers, real name, place of employment, address or other identifying information. If you want to share an e-mail address use a disposable account through a place such as Yahoo! or even Google so that your personal e-mail is not exposed. You should also take steps to ensure that you do not give too much information about where you live and such. While many people are harmless in the virtual worlds there are occasionally those who are dangerous and you need to take steps to protect yourself.

Always give personal information that you do decide to share in a private message or instant message only. Never give the information in a public or open chat channel, and additionally, never speak the information if you are using a voice connection. This could pass your information along to more people than you ever intended which could be dangerous. Simply sending a private message still lets you share the information, but ensures that others who are close to you do not get your information.

Never meet someone in real life without spending a lot of time getting to know then in the virtual world first, and even then look for a public place that is busy to meet up. This helps to not only reduce the stress and anxiety of meeting in person for the first time, but also helps to ensure that everyone is safe. This is a golden rule for meeting anything that you do not know, regardless of whether you meet them in a virtual world or not. Keeping this valuable safety tip in mind can help you to avoid many of the potential dangers that happen from meeting up with someone on the internet, and will allow you to stay safe.
