Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream Review

Combines the Smoothness of Cream with the Crunch of Black Walnuts

Zachary Fruhling
Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream combines the smoothness of cream with the crunch of toasted black walnuts. Black Walnut ice cream is usually difficult or impossible to find, but this traditional ice cream favorite is now available in Safeway's Signature brand of premium ice cream. While the Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream may not have the extreme richness of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, the Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream is an extremely delicious and decadent dessert for those who love nut and cream ice creams.

Black walnuts are an extremely flavorful variety of walnut, but they are quite a bit less common than plain walnuts. As such it can be very difficult to find a source for traditional black walnut ice cream. I grew up with black walnut ice cream because black walnuts were grown in my hometown, but I have only recently begun to find black walnut ice cream generally available in the Safeway Select ice cream isle at Safeway grocery stores. Safeway Select ice creams are every bit as delicious as name brand ice creams such as Dreyer's, and often the Safeway Select ice creams are available in more original and creative flavors than traditional name brands. Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream is a case in point of this principle, since Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream seems to be the only black walnut ice cream that is readily available in local supermarket chains.

Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream contains a generous portion of large black walnut chunks in a creamy black walnut flavored ice cream. The ice cream itself is black walnut flavored, giving a flavor complexity and texture to the Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream that is unavailable in plainer ice cream flavors such as vanilla. The large chunks of black walnuts make for a complimentary pairing of smoothness and crunchiness, with something to melt in your mouth and something to chew. And the texture /flavor combination would be a perfect pairing with a holiday dessert coffee or as a special topping on pumpkin pie or apple pie.

Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream is available at any Safeway store; so if you have never had the pleasure of trying a black walnut ice cream, pick up a tub of Safeway Black Walnut Ice Cream while it is still generally available. It is likely that the Safeway Select Black Walnut Ice Cream will not be a permanent addition to the Safeway Select lineup of ice cream flavors, so pick up this unique ice cream flavor while it is still available.

You can usually find it in Safeways throughout California. They all can have it but not all of them do. Just go to a manager and tell him/her you want black walnut ice cream and they'll probably start stocking it. Tell your friends to ask for it and it'll get stocked more places and you'll never be without it!

Now I really, really want to try some black walnut ice cream. I know that I would love it . Too bad there are no Safeway stores in Raleigh, NC. That will be my excuse to fly out to California soon !
