Safeway.Com Grocery Delivery Sucks - Safeway Isn't Much Better

Right Idea, Wrong Company

Scott Schlimmer
When planning to move to the city, I looked forward to lots of things. One of the main ones was grocery delivery. It sounded like a great concept, especially since I was going car-less and would stick to public transportation. Pick my groceries and comparison shop online. Place my order. Then sit and do something more fun than grocery shopping.

Boy was I wrong! I hate grocery shopping, but Safeway.com sent me back into the grocery store. I've concluded - Safeway sucks.

Off all the problems with Safeway.com, where do I start?

First, I've never had an accurate order. I've called the sucky Safeway customer service people countless times. They aren't very good or very nice, but I come to expect that from customer service, which often sucks everywhere. The worst was when the grocery delivery person forgot my bottled water, undoubtedly the heaviest item in grocery list. No problem - I didn't need the water that day, they could just complete our agreement and deliver the heavy water another day. Nope, safeway.com is far too sucky to honor its grocery agreement. A refund was the best I could get. Worse, the minimum order for delivery is $50, so I couldn't even place a new order to get my water.

Kind of defeats the purpose of online delivery if I have to go to the grocery store to get what I need. Safeway sucks.

Delivery timing is even worse. When you're purchasing your groceries, you have two delivery options. You can pay $9.95 for a four hour grocery delivery window, like 4 pm to 8 pm. Or you can pay $12.95 for a two hour window, like 7 pm to 9 pm. I almost always paid the $3 so I could spend less time waiting for my groceries.

I cannot count how many times my groceries were late. Not just a few minutes, but hours late. Consistently. By the end, I couldn't remember the last time Safeway.com delivered during the delivery window. It was somewhere more than five times in a row. Safeway sucks!

Worse, Safeway.com refused to even give me the $3 back, which is what I would have paid for a for hour window. How can Safeway charge more for a shorter time window if they consistently aren't going to honor it? Easy, by sucking and not offering a good product.

The concept is great, but I've had enough. I purchased a car, and fortunately I'm close to Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's, which are far superior to Safeway - better products at lower prices. Safeway.com sucks.

Would you like to hear you shouldnt say to customers at a customer service call center, check out the fab CSR'S for Safeway! If you want hold on bank account because you went in to a store, paid with a debit card and wanted to spend $20.00, then having a total of $100.00 of your money hold up your account, visit your Kingman Safeway!!!!

I agree that safeway.com sucks. Totally useless with their missing items and substitutions that are usually considerably more expensive that the items I ordered, almost always result is whatever menus had been planned being unachievable without another screwed up delivery attempt or a trip to the store (what is the point of delivery then?), and so on and so forth. I, too, have never had an accurate order from them, EVER. I've tried their delivery service many times. Many years ago before Webvan overdid their expenses and expansion before they could afford it, they were a fantastic grocery delivery service. Very reliable, excellent quality, short delivery windows, very few (and quite sensible subsitutions), et. I curse the day they went out of business. Sadly, my city also has a private grocery delivery service through Whole Foods that I've found to be only marginally better than Safeway (which still results in a useless delivery most of the time), so we're pretty stuck.

    I don't enco

Great point Corey. The only thing that might throw you a wrench is price. But if you can give a damn and charge comparable prices, I think you could take away lots of customers.

Wow; at first I was a little worried about having to compete with Safeway in considering opening up my own Grocery Delivery Business, but after your report, all I have to do to steal their customers away is give a damn :).

Just goes to show, when you want a good service, you need the little guys.

Would anybody really complain about $3? You should look up "straw man fallacy".

    (meant to post here)

Wow you asked for $3 back lol. I thought they gave you a bunch of wrong products etc. You complain about very little things. I'd like to see you run a business.

How many times have you used them, Bobby? I'm with you - I wouldn't mind 20-30 mins late. Also they never offered me a future free delivery or anything like that, even if 2 hours late. I'm glad to hear things went better for you!

Really... when I shopped Safeway.com I had issues, sure, but never anything that made me upset with the company. If I didn't have something delivered, I called the number on the receipt and my account was credited.

If they were going to be late on the delivery, they would usually call me in the middle to let me know. If the new delivery was at a time that was an inconvenience or if it was going to be much later, often they credited my account for a free future delivery. The drivers and customer service representatives were always polite and friendly, so I usually didn't push them for a free delivery refund if they were going to be 20-30 minutes late... I had planned out my day to be at home during that time anyway so staying a bit longer wasn't a problem. That being said, more than half the time they arrived right at the beginning of my window, even if I specified a 4 hour window. I lived on the fourth floor of an apartment building with a tiny elevator, so having the guy dolly
