First make sure you always in a wide open area (this could prevent fires from starting). If you are in an enclosed space it the firework (generally rockets) could land in a bad space and start a contact fire.
Secondly try to be on a hard, flat surface such as a paved drive way. If you are lighting fireworks in a grassy field lay down a flat board. This will help with stability to help the firework go in the intended direction. It will also help in case the firework does not go in the intended direction so that you can get away in time.
Thirdly, have water nearby. It is recommended to have a water hose and bucket of water just in case a fire should start.
Fourthly, keep a safe distance away from the firework after you have lit it. The firework could go in a wrong direction, explode, or just burst into flames and you do not want to be near it if that happens because it could hurt you.
Fifthly, keep your eyes away from fireworks. If you are lighting fireworks, never check tubing by placing your eyes over the tube. It could be potentially dangerous and blind you.
Sixthly, wear safety glasses. These will help with flying particals and debri from fireworks, getting into your eyes. They could just save your sight!
Seventhly, do not relight a dud. If a firework does not seem to be working, you should leave it and move on to the next one. If you try to relight it, you could cause a multitude of possible scenarios and hurt yourself or others.
Eighthly, never point or throw a firework at another person. Sparks from the firework could cause a fire and could hurt that person.
Ninthly, be sure to stay away from animals while lighting fireworks. The noise and lights will often scare animals. So be sure to stay away from them, or keep house pets inside the house while you are lighting them.
And lastly be sure to dispose of your fireworks properlly. Find all the debri after lighting them, soaking them thoroughly in water, and then throw them away.
If you follow all these safety tips you will be sure to enjoy the fun of simple fireworks with your family!
