Today I am talking with the always enchanting Sahara Davenport. Most people know Sahara from her time on RuPaul's Drag Race season 2. Sahara will dish on the upcoming season of RuPaul's Drag Race plus give us insight into her life, her love and her newest music video!
Abby: Congratulations on making your second music video, Go Off!
Sahara: Thank you so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had a lot of fun doing it.
Abby: I think that my favorite part of the video was the section in the Catwoman suit.
Sahara: Yeah. That was from the original concept of the video. I was going to do all of my favorite super heroes in white. Then I decided, oh no. I did decide to keep Catwoman. I love Catwoman! She seems to be the part that is sticking out to a lot of people. So I'm happy I kept it.
Abby: What was your favorite part?
Sahara: I actually liked sitting down with the boys. It's something that I hadn't done before. I'm usually a self-contained, a total act, so I had never really thought of myself as being sexy. When the idea came up I was like, "Oh, I don't know, I don't know." When it came to actually doing it, it was fun to empower myself in that way.
Abby: Don't you have a remix EP coming out in mid December?
Sahara: Yes. DJ Manny Lehman is involved. And it will feature remixes from John Rizzo, Jaime J. Sanchez, Vjuan Allure, and Joey C of DivaNation. It will be great!
Abby: Manila Luzon and Jiggly Caliente are in your video. Will you be in Manila's video for Hot Couture?
Sahara: I choreographed Manila Luzon's video for Hot Couture. So on set I was taking care of the dancers. I didn't get a chance to get myself in drag and get my shot. I won't be there, but my choreography is there.
Abby: Jiggly Caliente will be on season 4 of RuPaul's Drag Race. What can you tell us about Jiggly?
Sahara: Oh wow. It is always so different knowing someone and then seeing them on TV because you don't know how they are captured or what light they are shown in. What I know from Jiggly personally is that she is a lot of fun, tons of fun. No pun intended. She is a great spirit. She is probably like a size 16 but she swears that she is a size 4. I love that attitude about her. There is nothing that can stop her as far as she is concerned.
Abby: So is she sweet or is she catty, or…
Sahara: She's a drag queen, pretty run of the mill. She is sweet when she needs to be and catty when she needs to be. The people in my circle are all amazing people, and Jiggly is really, really sweet. Sometimes I think that she doesn't even know how powerful she is. I am happy that she is getting a chance to experience this whole ride and do the RuPaul's Drag Race thing so she can come to terms with who she is.
Abby: Sahara, you sound like you are a good friend to your friends.
Sahara: Thank you.
Abby: Do you know any of the other contestants for season 4?
Sahara: I do. I know quite a few of them actually. I am also really good friends with Milan who lives in New York City. We run in the same circle. We've done viral videos before. We were all over YouTube together before the Race. I know Latrice Royale from Florida. She is really, really, really sweet. I met Chad Michaels in L.A. of course. He is great. I competed with Phi Phi O'Hara in Miss Gay US of A which is a national pageant, about 3 years ago. We were in the same group. Willam, I worked with in L.A. I know a great deal of them. They are all different queens each bringing something different to the table. I can't wait to see it, girl, I'm excited!
Abby: Who are you rooting for?
Sahara: My home town girls. I am rooting for Jiggly. I am rooting for Milan. I would be happy if Chad or Phi Phi or Latrice… I'm rooting for my girls but I'm kind of indifferent.
Last year I was rooting for Manila. I was rooting for my baby. The year before I was on the show so it was a "Drag Race" in my apartment. So this year I am happy to step back and watch. I'm sure that I will have Jiggly calling me every five minutes to discuss the episodes and what happened. It's great to not be in the mix this time.
Abby: How did you and Manila meet?
Sahara: I had just come back from working in Japan. I was jetlagged and it was one o'clock in the morning, and I went to a bar. He was there and he, I guess, seduced me and picked me up. Here we are five and a half years later. That's the long story short. So there's the romance.
Abby: Will you get married?
Sahara: Will we get married? Since it became legal here in New York City it was the first thing that everyone was asking the night that it happened on our Twitter and Facebook. "When's the wedding? When's the wedding?" We have just been so busy that we haven't had time to sit down and discuss or plan. We talk about it and throw around ideas but we haven't set any definite plans. I don't have an engagement ring on my finger yet so we'll see.
Abby: Then here comes the big question!
Sahara: Uh Oh!
Abby: Would you consider having your wedding filmed as a TV special?
Sahara: I think… we would. If I called Manila I think she would jump at the chance, for the publicity! I am kind of different in the respect that I am a little more private. Since so many people are interested, I think we definitely would consider making it public. It is a beautiful thing. I think it would be great to share that.
Abby: I know that I would watch.
Sahara: I hope so! I think that it would be great for people to see that Love is Love. Showing that would be very instrumental in the whole cause.
Abby: I completely agree.
Abby: What advice do you have for teens struggling with bullying in school or at home?
Sahara: It is really hard when I read about all of the suicides and the situations that are going on. I always think back to how it was for me. I was kind of a loud mouth, and I would take it. I think that the advice that I would give is that "You are worth it." It is important that all of these beautiful kids to know that they are worth it. They have a purpose, and they definitely have a place. I know that it is hard to tell a kid that "You are amazing. You are powerful. Just look inside." We want to say that. It takes time to actually look in the mirror and know that. I guess the biggest thing would be to hang in there. Hang in there and find the support. Find the people who love you.
Coming into this reality thing I really wasn't prepared for all of the haters and the negative opinions, and that can be draining. So I know as a kid if you've got people bullying you and throwing you around that you don't have the strength to deal with it. You have to find the love and find the light. Dive into that and use that to strengthen you.
Abby: Thank you!
Abby: Sahara, if I checked Santa's list would it say that you have been a good or bad boy this year?
Sahara: I am always a good boy.
Abby: Should we ask Manila?
Sahara: I have been a fantastic boy and I've probably been a bad girl.
That is one of the perks of being a drag artist. Putting on that wig, those glasses, that Super Power, then you get to do whatever you want to do!
Abby: You may have just convinced a few closet queens to come out or in this case to "GO OFF" with just that line alone.
