Sahara, based on the Clive Cussler novel, is entertaining, funny and worthy of a second viewing. Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn and Penelope Cruz star in this perfect mixture of action and comedy. A little over two hours long, Sahara is a long movie that captures the audience's attention until the ending credits.
Matthew McConaughey, playing Dirk Pitt, and Steve Zahn, who stars as Al Giordino, are the perfect team. All throughout the movie, Dirk and Al work together like clock work, reading each other's mind, always being one step ahead. Penelope Cruz stars as a doctor researching a plague that originated in Mali, which just happens to be under control of a corrupt leader who has started a Civil War. Like all movies based on books, the plot neatly ties together so that all the characters can simultaneously fight evil.
Sahara is a wonderful movie that offers as many laughs as it does action scenes. Matthew McConaughey is perfect as the hero who gets the girl and Steve Zahn is hilarious, as usual. Everyone has that one goofy actor that they have the biggest crush on. Steve Zahn is mine. One of my favorite movies Zahn was in is Happy, Texas, you must rent it in order to understand Zahn's quirky nature that I love so.
Without Zahn's zany facial expressions, I don't think Sahara would have been as good of a movie. Of course, without Matthew McConaughey it wouldn't have been so hot either. And one must add that only William H. Macy could make the Admiral as lovable as he is. Point is that the screenplay and the way it is delivered by the cast is what makes Sahara a great movie. I have heard that Cussler's novels are as entertaining as this movie, but I'm afraid now I'm biased and would only be able to see the oh so tan Matthew McConaughey and quirky Steve Zahn. If you're interested in a movie that will entertain you not only by comedy but visual stunts as well, then Sahara is the movie for you.
