SAHM: Cheap Things to Do with Your Kids on a Summer Evening

Christie Silvers
Summer evenings can be hum-drum sometimes. You've spent all day running around with your kids, or just doing the normal routine of work, home, chores. When evening comes you can't possible imagine much more than just curling up with the television and vegging out on snacks. Luckily, I'm here to tell you otherwise! Summer evening fun can be some of the best fun all year. Your kids will be amazed and you'll be thrilled to supply them with lasting memories they'll cherish for a lifetime. Not only that, but they're CHEAP! Here are some cheap things to do with your kids on a summer evening.

Catch Fireflies -- You know you want to. Just go on and run around the yard with an empty pickle jar as your child squeals with delight at the flickering bugs avoiding their grasp. Put a little grass in the bottom of the jar. Poke some ventilation holes in the top of the lid (not too big or you'll find escaped fireflies all through your house later that night). Then let loose and have fun!

Roast Marshmellows -- You don't have to have a giant bonfire, or even a fancy fire pit, to be able to roast marshmellows on a warm summer evening. All you need is a small, safe area, a bag of marshmellows, and the desire for something gooey and sweet. Throw in some chocolate bars and graham crackers to turn those marshmellows in s'mores. Be prepared for stickiness at the end of the evening.

Camp Out -- Another fun, yet cheap, thing to do with your kids on a summer evening is camping out! You don't even have to leave the comforts of your own backyard to have a good time. Simply pitch a tent in the backyard, light some tiki torches, and enjoy your time together as a family.

Tell Ghost Stories -- While you're spending your time outside, why not share some of your favorite campfire ghost stories with your own children? They'll most likely get a kick out of them, and may even find them as corny as you did at their age. Combine this with roasting marshmellows and camping out for a full day of fun.

Flashlight Tag -- Do you remember the fun of running away from a beam of light? Flashlight tag is fun, provides exercise, and induced a stream of laughter for all involved (whether participants or observers). You don't have to do more than just introduce the game and provide flashlights to your kids. They'll have a lot of fun.

Having some good, clean fun with your kids doesn't have to cost you a thing. Spending time in your own backyard can be just as fun as packing up the car and heading off somewhere, and it's a lot easier on the wallet in this terrible economy. Show your children the joys of spending their summer outside. Kids these days have too many electronics to hold their attention. Draw them away from all that and introduce the simplest of joys: Nature!

Very useful tips, and sounds like something the kids would love to do.
