Family/Friend Recommendations -- Some of the best recommendations a stay-at-home can receive for playgroups will come from close family and friends. These are people who usually have your best interest at heart and will be more than willing to share suggestions and names of groups with you. If you have family and friends who are in the same situation as you are, you may even have a playgroup buddy from the start.
Religious Groups -- If you are active in a local church or religious group, you may be able to ask for playgroup suggestions from other members. Not only that, but many churches will actually have playgroup meetings already. If you aren't a member, check your local newspaper as some will have group meeting announcements in the community section.
School Parents -- Are you the parent of a school-aged child as well? If so, ask the moms of your child's classmates for playgroup suggestions. You may just discover another stay-at-home mom who has recently discovered the playgroup of your dreams and is aching to share that news with someone else. Never hurts to ask!
Library Storytime -- Most public libraries have specific days and/or times set aside for the small children to come and enjoy storytime. This gives them a chance to learn about the library and develop a love of the written word. Not only that, but it gives children the opportunity to socialize with other children and gives the stay-at-home moms a chance to meet new people. Sitting quietly in the back of the room while the librarian reads about a giant talking dog gives you a good moment to chit-chat with the mom sitting next to you.
Pediatrician's Office -- We all know how many times children need a quick visit to their pediatrician's office in those first few years of life. There's always a weight check, immunizations, the sniffles, bumps from falls, and numerous other reasons to hang out in the waiting room. Lucky for you, there are also many other parents sitting there in the same predicaments you are. That makes for the perfect opening to make a new friend and find a playgroup that may be the perfect fit for you and your little one.
Local Park/Playground -- Lastly, the local park or playground is a great place to meet new people. Most will be stay-at-home moms just like you, and possibly looking to meet other parents as well. The kids will be running and playing, possibly making new friends of their own, and you'll be sitting there wondering how to occupy your time. If you've been going there for a while you'll probably already know some of the other parents, or at least their children, so why not strike up a conversation about playgroups?
There are many ways to find a playgroup for you and your child to attend. Of course the smaller the town you live in, the smaller the selection of playgroups you will most likely find. If you find that happening, it could be the perfect opportunity for you to start a playgroup of your own. If you're looking for a group then chances are that there are other stay-at-home moms out there looking for the same. Being social and asking questions is the best way to make new friends and find that special playgroup for your little one.
