Saigon - The Greatest Story Never Told Album Review

Is This Really the Greatest Story Never Told?

The Reviewer
Brooklyn based rapper Saigon has long been on the hip hop scene. It seemed like his path to success would be paved with gold. He was signed to one of the hottest producers in the game in Just Blaze, he was featured prominently on the hit television show Entourage and he received positive adulation from his peers. However, Saigon's debut album still remained in what seemed like perpetual limbo. Now Saigon is poised to release his debut album The Greatest Story Never Told. Can Just Blaze's protégé live up to the hype?

The first single off of The Greatest Story Never Told, Come On Baby, was released all the way back in 2007. The track features Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz. The song features strong production from Just Blaze and a solid guest appearance from Jay-Z. The song definitely has a throwback feel to it.

The title track The Greatest Story Never Told is one of the stronger tracks on the album. Just Blaze really delivers on the production and Saigon shows off his incredible lyrical ability.

It's Alright features Marsha Ambrosius and it is produced by Kanye West. The song features a very prominent Luther Vandross sample and finds Kanye going back to his soul sample roots.

On Clap, Saigon is joined by Faith Evans. Just Blaze delivers another strong track and Faith Evans adds a catchy chorus.

Q-Tip and Fatman Scoop join Saigon on The Invitation. The song is found early in the album and is a good set up for the rest of the album. The hook delivered by Q-Tip however is not all that strong.

Preacher features Lee Fields & The Expressions. The song is very different than what is on the radio today. The song might be considered controversial by some, but it is one of the better tracks on the album.

Believe It might be the most commercial song on the album. The song even features an auto-tuned chorus. The song is very solid and well put together.

Better Way features Layzie Bone from Bone Thugs N Harmony. The song once again showcases Saigon's ability as a storyteller. The production is very melodic and almost hypnotic.

Bring Me Down Part 2 definitely has an epic feel to it. The song could be Saigon's mainstream hit if serviced to radio. The production is very unique and different.

Overall The Greatest Story Never Told is worth the wait. Although it has been a long time coming, Saigon definitely delivers on the effort. If you are looking for a very commercial album, this is not for you. However, if you are looking for quality hip hop you will definitely enjoy the album. Overall The Greatest Story Never Told gets 8 out of 10. If you are a fan of Saigon make sure you pick up The Greatest Story Never Told when it is available in stores on February 15th.
