Saint Louis Wine Sampling

The Best Wine Bars to Treat Your Tastebuds on a Tight Budget

Linda Riggs
Saint Louis is a Midwest city that is a very affordable place to live. While it's probably not thought of as a top city to visit for wine tasting, with a little bit of inside information on the right places to visit, wine tasting in Saint Louis can be a very affordable and surprisingly fun experience.

I've lived in Saint Louis most of my life and have had many opportunities to sample some fine wines at different local establishments. The fact that my favorite bars and restaurants are affordable is really no surprise. The variety of interesting wines that can be easily found at these establishments is the pleasant surprise. Here is a list of my favorite spots and the wines I enjoyed at each of them. Consider a visit to these wonderful locations the next time you're in the Saint Louis area.

Cunetto House of Pasta
5453 Magnolia Ave
Saint Louis, MO 63139

This Italian restaurant is known for it's excellent menu. I have frequented this restaurant more often than I'd like to admit and can personally tell you that there is not a thing on the menu that they don't do right. Everything is delicious including the wines I sampled. On my last visit I was able to sample a red, fruity wine that pleased my sense of smell the moment it was poured. I also enjoyed a sip of the wine my dinner date chose and found it to be a spicy, white treat.

Del Pietro's
Watson Rd.
St Louis
Saint Louis, MO 63109

I live so close to this restaurant that I could walk there and I often do. This cozy Italian restaurant is known for it's fine food at very reasonable prices. The wines I tasted on my last visit included a spicy red wine called Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica 2005 and a very bold red wine called Kenwood Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. Both were more than pleasing to my pallet.

Cousin Hugo's
3233 Laclede Station Rd
Saint Louis, MO 63143

Cousin Hugo's features American cuisine and everything I've ever ordered there has been a real treat. Their hamburgers are fantastic and they serve fries that are perfectly crisp. On my last visit, I was pleasantly surprised at the wine selections. I sampled Montes Leyda Sauvignon Blanc 2008, a very crisp white wine. My brother sampled Geyser Peak Walking Tree Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, a bold red wine. We were both very pleased with our selections.

Phil's Bar-B-Que
9205 Gravois Rd
Saint Louis, MO 63123

I would never have expected the small bar in this restaurant to carry such interesting wines as this one happened to. The barbecue was so good that it was mouth watering. The wines we tasted were a red vintage called Punto Final Malbec Reserva 2006 and Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera 2008 which was a very earthy red. The wine and atmosphere proved to be a great experience.

Pietro's
3801 Watson Rd
Saint Louis, MO 63109

The bread that they bring to your table just as you sit down is reason enough to visit this establishment. With that said, the wines that my sister and I sampled at this location were among the best listed. I enjoyed a fruity red wine called Burge Family Clochemerle GSM 2005. My sister indulged in a smooth white wine called Big House White 2008.

Every one of these fine spots offer unique atmosphere and great food. They surprisingly also offer a fantastic variety of delicious wines. I've found it's quite easy to enjoy a love of fine wine without spending a fortune. The key was in visiting well known establishments with an open mind for what they might offer. Visiting any of these bars and restaurants will surely be an enjoyable experience. Cheers!
