For horror movie fans, the "Leprechaun" movies should come as no surprise as a great addition to any Saint Patrick's day rotation. These chilling films paint a disturbing image of the often adored Leprechaun creature. Rather than being a good will spreading little elf, the titular character in this film would rather bite off your finger than have a bowl of Lucky Charms. The driving lesson behind the series is a firm stand against avarice- though they aren't above pouring a little nightmare fuel on some classic fairy tales.
The sequel, "Leprechaun 2" attempted to make the creature a bit deeper as well as a little bit sympathetic. It retains the disturbing nature of the original while making the plotline a more intricate one by adding a strange romantic hook. It might not be the tenderest film to curl up on the sofa next to your sweetheart on Saint Patrick's Day, but it will give you some chills. The greater elements of suspense used in the latter parts of the movie are a welcome addition.
Anyone wanting to continue their Saint Patrick marathon with "Leprechaun 4 In Space" or "Leprechaun In The Hood" can feel free to do so. For those movie lovers not willing to suspend their disbelief for these fairly outlandish premises, something a little more on the tame side might be necessary. "The Luck of the Irish" is a charming 1920 film that plays as a nice companion to the holiday. It lacks the special effects and modern benefits of some of the other options, but more than makes up for this with its historical value.
"The Last Leprechaun" can be a great choice for parents looking to spend the holiday with their children. It's a thrilling film about a pair of children apprehensive about their father remarrying. Their suspicions prove to be correct when they learn his Irish fiancé is a wicked banshee. For cinema fans not interested in films titled after little green hat-wearing elves, a movie like "St. Patrick's Day." This amusing film follows an Irish-American family reunion in which the family is ordered to cease drinking. Unapologetically humorous and surprisingly self-aware, the film is a treat to view on the holiday of the same name.
The best has been saved for last- this feature film chronicles the acts and intricacies of the main himself, Saint Patrick. "St. Patrick: The Irish Legend" is a superb movie that brings viewers a front row look at all the good the titular saint did for the populace. Genuinely entertaining and informative, it does a great job keeping you watching. Any movie fan hoping to learn more about the history behind the holiday's namesake is welcome to give it a chance and learn a few things.
