Little did we know that it would be our very own Coach Sean Payton getting the last laugh.
Peter King has his usual Monday Morning Quarterback column up on Monday morning and the opening story was one of the best I have ever read.
This past Friday night, the Saints' coaches and staff in town decided to partake in one of the premier restaurants in the city and it was St. Elmo Steakhouse. Together in a private room, they were having one last big celebratory dinner due to the Saints victory in Super Bowl XLIV a little less than a month ago.
Word got around the restaurant that Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones had planned to be in that same room on Saturday night for dinner with his staff. According to a waiter at St. Elmo, Jones called ahead to reserve a bottle of Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon for dinner. It just so happens that Sean Payton wanted the very same wine for dinner as well. Sadly, there was only one bottle left and it was reserved already.
The waiter advised Coach Payton of the situation, "Sorry, sir. We have only one bottle left, and it's reserved for Mr. Jones."
It appears the coach of the black and gold didn't care and still wanted the bottle that his former employer had reserved. Payton was the assistant coach of the Cowboys from 2003 - 2005 under Bill Parcells before becoming leader of the Saints. The waiter was in a bit of a predicament as he didn't know who should he upset more: one of the most powerful sports' owners ever or the coach of the most recent Super Bowl champions?
Eventually the bottle came out and the Saints' staff emptied it easily. Coach Payton then proceeded to write a small note on the label of the bottle of Caymus and advised the waiter to please have the bottle waiting for the Cowboys' staff and Jerry Jones the next evening. The note was very simple as it merely said:
WHO DAT!
World Champions XLIV
Sean Payton
One word for you Mr. Payton: BRA-VO!
