There are few haunted locations with the reputation that is held by Ashley House. Despite being built in the mid 1800s Ashley House and its entire historic memorabilia survived the massive flood waters that devastated New Orleans. Located as it is behind the Avenue Plaza Hotel Resort, on St. Charles Ave., where I stayed a few weeks before the storm hit, it truly is a ghost hunters dream.
Though the ghosts in residence claim it was they who held the flood waters at bay, this writers opinion is that salvation was more likely due to the original designers building the property above ground because the common superstition of the day was that feared diseases such as malaria and yellow fever originate from the ground!
Paranormal investigators from all around the world make annual trips to the site of this historic building. Psychic conventions and ghost hunters congregate in the lounge with its authentic antique furniture and intriguing spiral staircase to summon forth the resident spirits. Civil war soldiers whose authenticated graffiti still adorns the whitewash walls of the upper bedrooms.
According to records the property was a boarding house for Confederate prisoners of war and according to Dr. Meneray, who is head of the rare books and manuscripts department at Tulane University's Library, the graffiti is genuine.
Plaques now adorn the wall with the authenticated text
"oh mortal man, so blind, so .....
To make so much of a woman....
To make that place a place of bliss
When nature made it ......."
and;
"a grey owl did eat a snake"
From the Avenue Plaza resort it is a short tram ride from your door to the French Quarter and all the paranormal excitement that lies therein, and if you can make it to Bourbon St. your visit will be complete.
Perhaps the Saints had the help of the Ghosts of Ashley House to help them to their historic win?
