Saints Vs Redskins Score Somehow Gets Saints to 12-0

Robert Dougherty
The Saints vs Redskins was the classic example of a trap game for New Orleans. Usually, a Saints vs Redskins score should be lopsided, but New Orleans had to come down from destroying New England, and Washington had nothing to lose. The Redskins have played hard for Jim Zorn, and looked poised to knock the Saints from the unbeaten. But the Saints vs Redskins score proved New Orleans might be a team of destiny - or just plain lucky.

The Saints' 33-30 overtime win couldn't have happened without a lot of luck. Two key reviews went their way, while the Redskins' missed a chip shot field goal that could have clinched it. Though they had no business going 12-0, New Orleans did it anyway.

Although Washington had largely been inept on offense this season, they tore through the New Orleans defense most of the way. Even when Drew Brees got his scores, the Redskins kept the lead throughout, and led by double digits for much of the second half. But a few key moments ruined all that for Washington.

The Saints vs Redskins score first turned late in the first half. Down 17-10, Brees threw a close interception - that then got ripped out by Robert Meachem and was returned for a touchdown. Upon further review, the interception call was questionable, but it went in New Orleans' favor.

Even after that, Washington wasn't deflated. They led throughout the second half, and had all but put things away late. Up 30-23, they needed a chip shot field goal with under 2 minutes left to clinch it - but they missed. Brees then threw a tying bomb to Meachem a minute later, and Jason Campbell later threw an interception for good measure. But New Orleans missed a long field goal to send it to overtime.

Finally, the Saints vs Redskins score was decided on another controversial review. After catching the ball, the Redskins' Mike Sellers rolled on the ground and fumbled - though it was too close to call if his body hit the ground first. Yet the referees found enough evidence to call it a fumble, and the Saints took over at the Redskins' 37. Several plays later, new starting kicker Garrett Hartley hit his own chip shot field goal.

There was no way New Orleans should have won, but they did. It was at this time last year that the 2007 Patriots started stealing wins too, instead of blowing teams out. The 3-9 Redskins shouldn't have been that hard to finish off, but they could easily be .500 if a few breaks went their way.

Since the Saints vs Redskins score turned on a few close reviews, the conspiracy theorists may be out in droves. But it says something that New Orleans can get those lucky breaks now, for about the first time ever. Washington, on the other hand, became just another stepping stone to history - though they shot themselves with that missed field goal.

At 12-0, the Saints only have Atlanta, Dallas, Tampa Bay and Carolina to go through to get their perfect season. But more important, they stayed at least a game ahead of the Vikings for NFC home field. If they had lost, the Vikings could have jumped ahead of them by beating the Cardinals tonight.

You cannot say that they had no business going 12-0. Any team can lose or win any game. They won because they won.
