Shakuntala is considered to be the hottest romantic Indian story, which was ever written with full of romance and suspense. It is a love story between world's the most beautiful woman and the handsome brave and strong prince of Hastinapur. This story has lot of significance, as the love fruit between Shakuntala and Prince Dushyant gave the heir of Hastinapur, who later became the King Bharat, on whose name Bharat or India was derived.

Story goes back many hundred's of years ago, when saints used to perform penances for the welfare of human kind. One such great saint Viswamitra who was on his penances when the gods in order to break his meditation sent the celestial beauty Menaka, who is considered to be the most beautiful women in all the three worlds. Her beauty was incomparable in the three worlds. Such a rare beauty was sent to seduce the saint. At first Menaka's magic did not work, but she kept on seducing the saint.

Alas! The saint's meditation gave up to Menaka's seductions and her sensuous body and the sweet songs. Saint Viswamitra couldn't control his human emotions and fell in love with the celestial beauty Menaka.

Due course of time she gave birth to a girl child from the saint Viswamitra and as she was the celestial beauty she had to abode to heaven. She left the infant in the Jungle who was protected by a bird named Shakun.

Hearing the cries of infant a sage Kanav came to her rescue and when he saw the beautiful girl child being protected by Shakun bird he named her "Shankuntala" . He picked her and started raring her as his own offspring. Ever since her birth Shakuntala was in woods, played with deer's, consoled by the songs of cooks and nightingales. Her body was ornamented by coloured and exotic flowers. Her best friends were the black buck, golden coloured deer, exotic peacocks, melodious parrots, different birds, and the other saint's kids.

She grew up very innocently, piously, without knowing the worldly affairs. She was just as tender as the petals of roses. Since she was brought up among birds and deer's , her voice was as sweet as nectar and songs used to enchant the wild birds, animals and all the living beings of the jungle.

She grew into a rarest of rare beauty; she had beautiful long, soft hair. Her eyes were beautiful like black buck's eyes black and long, her lips were like the petals of roses. Her cheeks were like red crimson raspberry. She was as white as milk, with long neck, slim figure with all the requirements that a maiden should have. She had thin long fingers and as tender as the petals of lotus. Her feet were small and gentle. She had sweet and thrilling voice, when she speaks each word poured like nectar.

Shakuntala devoted her whole life as a hermit's daughter taking care sages and helping them in discharging divine duties.

Same time in the palace of Hastinapur prince Dushyant was growing under strict instruction of their Guru (Master) he (Dushyant) was good in sword fighting, horse riding and getting trained to become the next king of his kingdom. After completion of his training the young and handsome prince Dushyant proceeds to his kingdom. And he soon engrossed in his princely duties. One day on the permission from the queen mother, young prince proceeds to Jungle along with his close friends to do hunting and spend time leisurely.

One day while the prince was hunting a golden deer in the woods met with an accident and had to be attended with first aid. So the hunting party proceeds to the sage Kanav Ashram, which was the nearest one. It was god's coincidence and providence that except Shankunta and her some lady friends no other human being was present in the Ashram.

Therefore as desired by destiny Shakuntala had to attend the wounded prince. Seeing the divine and extraordinary attractiveness and gorgeousness of Shakuntala, prince Dushyant could not take his eyes off from the exceptional beauty, and her hospitality made him fall in love with her at once. She too was attracted by the fine-looking handsome prince. They both fell in love with each other at the first sight. As if Kamdev the god of love had striked both with his arrows of love.

Prince Dushyant who only knew princely duties didn't have words to express his feelings to her. But his emotions had knew no boundaries and his heart jumped like a cork in the great waves of oceans. His love slowly bowed into adoration and at closing stages so happened he started worshiping her. He was tossing in his bed all the night waiting the sun to rise, so that he can meet her. He was neither hungry- thirsty, nor interested in hunting and in any worldly affairs. He was simply looked as if a body without a soul in him.

But at last he broke his silence by singing poems in the praise of Shakuntala, seeing his new attitude his friends were also surprised at Dushyant. Shakuntala all her life lived like a hermit and could not understand her feelings towards him. But gradually her emotions were also surfaced and she accepted her love towards Prince Dushyant. Both were deep in love with each other.

Both sat hours under the shade of the trees and talked and showed their inner feelings by singing songs holding their hands together. Seeing their love the jungle was filled with joy, air was flowing happily, birds chirping & cool breeze flowed. The jungle seemed to be in rhythymic with these two. The love was eternal and both were lost in one another without the worldly interference. It seemed as if god has stopped the time just to enjoy the beautiful experience of love between two young extraordinary beings.

As the time passed prince Dushyant and the striking beautiful maiden Shakuntala were having courtship with each other.

When their love reached its pinnacle, one day Dushyant proposed Shakuntala to marry him. Both of them got married in front of goddess in the nearest temple, by exchanging garlands of flowers in the Gandharva cult.

That night when Shankuntala came after her bath wearing light coloured saree and her ornaments were of white coloured flowers. Dushyant was eagerly waiting under the moon for the arrival of his beautiful bride. As she approached him she was breathing fast and sweating in cold. Dushyant slowly stared un-peeling the greatest and the tender lotus (Shankutala) petals one after other. Her breathing became fast and cooing sound increased. when Dushyant reached the inner most petal by putting bit force the cooing sound transformed into melodies music and Shakuntala's heart throbbed and she felt as if it was coming out. She caught tightly Dushyant's head and brought him near her bossom. Her nails went deep into Dushyant's skin and both felt panting after a great volcano flowing lava.

Next day Dushyant got news that his father was ill and he has to leave the ashram. Unwilling to leave his bride behind the ashram but only to attend his ailing father he left the ashram. He gave a ruby ring which was his princely sign and went to his castle with a promise to tell his parents about their marriage and take her to his kingdom very soon.

As time passed away Prince Dushyant didn't returned. Slowly the time ticks away and tender bud Shakuntala becomes pregnant. Her father sage Kanav understanding the delicate situation without wasting time takes Shakuntala to Hastinapur. But fate has something else stored for Shakuntala. Now the prince Dushyant became the king and he is unable to remember Shakuntala nor remember his marriage with her. After lot of persuasion, Dushyant asks Shakuntala about the proof that they both got married.

Suddenly she remembers the ruby ring which Dushyant gave her at the time of separation. But Alas! She lost it. The ruby ring which was given to her by Dushyant was lost in water on her travel to Hastinapur. At that time she remembers the Curse given by rishi Durvasa when once he visited the ashram and was asking about sage Kanav but Shakuntala was lost in the thoughts of Prince Dushyant and didn't attended him. Seeing her attitude he at once gave the curse that whoever she is remembering at that moment that person should forget her. Immediately sage Kanav came and hearing the curse by rishi Durvasa he pleads him to forgive her. Then rishi Durvasa told him that a curse can't be taken back but it can be remedied. So he gives a relief by saying that the person who will see the thing which is very dear to both, then he will remember. So she lost the ring & couldn't prove her marriage, and with heavy heart came back to her Ashram.

Meanwhile Shakuntala gave birth to a beautiful boy child and he was being reared by the saints of Ashram.

There is a saying time is very powerful, it so happened when Shakunlata on her way to Hastinapur lost the ruby ring, which was swallowed by a big fish. The same fish was caught and brought by the fisherman tribe as a gift to king Dushyant. While cooking the fish the royal cook found the ruby ring and came running to the king Dushyant. The moment King Dusyant saw the ring his lost memory came back like a flash to him. He immediately set out to meet his wife and the queen of Hastinapur.

Thus he brought his wife Shakuntala & son Bharat who became the legendary Bharat.

Thus the greatest ever love and romantic Indian story, which is called Shakuntala.
