Sales Tax in Florida

Paying Quarterly Sales Tax in Florida

Wayne Thomas
Since 2003 our corporation has been involved in two businesses in the state of Florida that required a sales tax account and number. The State requires the filling of a quarterly sales tax report. That report sent to the Florida Department of Revenue must be filled out and sent in by the 20th of the month beginning at the end of each quarter. With your sales tax account you will receive information on the regulations involved in having a sales tax number. You receive a certificate with your number on it, it must be posted in your physical place of business. A coupon booklet is included to aid you in preparing, paying and filing your sales tax quarterly return. Now it is August 26 and I will fill out and send in my quarterly report after the first day and by the 20th day of September.

You also get sent to you a discretionary sales surtax information sheet. On it you have a list of the of the rates in each county in which you make sales of or deliver taxable goods or services. In Florida the 6% tax rate is increased by the county's discretionary sales surtax, which may change each year. Calhoun County where we are located has a 1% increase which they have extended until 12/31/14.

One of the two businesses we operated as a partnership, Family Games was one such business required to file sales tax. We operated for some time and closed that Game Room. Not no longer needing that sales tax account and number, did not make it where I did not have send a quarterly report. Thus I filled out the form and filled in the amounts 00.00 for each section required. Doing this for a few months I finally decided I did not need to keep that tax number and was released from it. Seems like a silly thing to do have fill in zeros and mail it when no business was conducted.

With our corporation B. Mc. Properties Inc. no actual business is currently being conducted where our sales tax number is not needed or required. None the less I must file quarterly reports. In those reports for thirteen months I have filled in zeros once again. I do not turn in this tax number and close the account because as the economy begins to recover we do plan to restart a business. Many businesses are in the same boat either going down or have gone out. Hopefully here at B. Mc. Properties we can hold on for a while, only because we have not had a business running needing capital to operate. We have found that although stimulus money was supposed help failing companies that we cannot get any of said money. Until the overall economy and the national debt recover, The, "no business here sign" remains up.
