Sales tax free shopping days are something many people look forward to. With money tight, we all need to be on the lookout for bargains. Not having to pay sales tax on school items and clothing can be a blessing and extremely helpful.
Following is a list, by state, of the dates for sales tax free shopping. Check to see if your state or a neighboring state is participating this year. Most states are only providing tax free shopping for a weekend, while a few states are providing tax free shopping for a week.
Alabama:
August 5-7, 2011 and includes:

School supplies under $50
Books under $30
Computer/equipment under $750
Connecticut:
August 21-27, 2011 and includes:
Clothing under $300
Shoes under $300
Florida:
August 12-14, 2011 and includes:
Books, clothing, footwear under $75
School supplies under $15
Iowa:
August 5-6, 2001 and includes:
Clothing under $100
Shoes under $100
Louisiana:
August 5-6, 2011 and includes:
Purchases under $2,500
Does not include taxable services
Maryland:
August 14-20, 2011 and includes:
Clothing under $100
Footwear under $100
Mississippi:
July 29-30, 2011 and includes:
Clothing under $100
Shoes under $100
Missouri:
August 5-7, 2011 and includes:
Clothing under $100
School supplies under $50
Computer software under $350
Computer/equipment under $3,500
New Mexico:
August 5-7, 2011 and includes:
Clothing and shoes under $100
School supplies under $15
Computers under $1,000
Computer equipment under $500
North Carolina:
August 5-7, 2011 and includes:

Several states that used to participate are no longer doing so. The above list is current as of today's date. Before you run out to shop, check this website to be sure that your state is still participating click here.
Normally when it is stated that clothes are sales tax free, many items are not included such as: belts, handbags, wallets, umbrellas, backpacks or briefcases. Regarding footwear: swim fins, rollerblades or other items worn on the feet, but not considered "shoes" are not tax free.
Shop smart, don't over spend just because you don't have to pay sales tax. This is a good opportunity to save some money and get the kids ready for school. Happy shopping!

Doesn't look like Pennsy, my state, or Jersey, Delaware or Maryland, the three closest states to me, are participating. Ditto Theresa's "bummer!"
