Saline and Silicone Breast Implant Warning

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had announced yesterday there maybe a possible association between saline and silicone gel filled breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) a rare form of cancer. Information reviewed by the FDA has suggested that patients with the implants could have a small but important risk of ALCL in the scar capsule next to the implant.

ALCL attacks lymph nodes and the skin and reports have noted it in the scar tissue around the implant.

The FDA is asking all health care practitioners to report all confirmed cases of the cancer to the agency for a better understanding.

In total so far the agency is knowledgeable of sixty cases of ALCL in women worldwide. It is estimated that five to ten women worldwide have breast implants. The alert issued by the FDA has been based on a review of scientific literature however, some could be duplicate reports. The information was provided by international governments and manufactures.

A majority of the cases which had been reviewed by the FDA had been diagnosed when patients had sought medical attention for implant associated symptoms such as lumps, swelling, pain or asymmetry which had developed after their initial surgical sites were fully healed. The symptoms had been due to collection of fluid (peri-implant seroma), hardening of breast area around implant or masses around the implant. Examination of the fluid and capsule surrounding the implant had led to the ALCL diagnoses.

Dr. William Maisel, FDA chief scientist for medical devices has stated that the agency is interested in understanding more precisely which patients could be at more risk and which implants could have a higher risk. The agency has noted they witnessed no difference in cancer rates between patients with saline against silicone implants.

The FDA has stated there is not a need for women with breast implants to change their current medical care routine and follow-up. ALCL is a very rare form of cancer. It occurs in a very small number among the millions of women who have implants. Women should still monitor their implants for any changes and contact their practitioner if they do notice a change.

Women considering implants should weigh the benefits and risks along with discussing them with their health care practitioner first.
