During mid summer - July and August, Spain can be extremely hot. Minimum temperatures in July and August being 19 degrees C and maximum temperatures of 27 and 28 degrees. The rest of the year the climate is generally better in the North, yet still warm in the South. The best months for visiting for the good weather is during spring or Autumn, apart from the Atlantic coast which has heavy rainfall during October and November.
August is the busiest month which could be both good and bad for a family. If they are wanting a quiet holiday it would be a better idea to take a holiday in months such as May or October, because the weather is still good and there are fewer tourists.
The good climate is a reason for Spain being such a popular summer sun holiday destination for Brits, as even in winter the temperatures are still generally warmer than in Britain. Spain also has considerably less rainfall than Britain, which also makes it an appealing destination.
Travelling
The flight to Reus is 2 hours 25 minutes, and has a relatively short transfer - between 20 and 40 minutes - to the resort, which is included in the price of the holiday. This is not too long for a first flight for the children, and the flights are at convenient times in the day - flying there - 12.40pm and flying back - 10.15am.
Beaches
The beaches of Salou are one of the resorts main attractions. With fine golden sand, and intimate beaches sheltered by pine trees and coves.
There are 8 main beaches in total: Poniente beach, Llevant beach, Capellans beach, Llenguadets beach, Llarga beach, Penya-Tallada beach, Cala de la Font beach and Cala Crancs beach.
During the summer at Llevant beach, an area of the 1200 metre beach is set aside for various sporting activities. This is the largest beach in Salou.
Cala Crancs beach is considered one of the most attractive.
The Poniente beach is more than a kilometre long and joins up with a beach from the neighbouring resort of Cambrils.
The sea is shallow due to the long beach and slow tide, which means it is safer for the children. The smaller, less crowded beaches may also be a safer option - although they not provide as much entertainment such as watersports.
Attractions
Aswell as the sun appealing to people wishing to take a holiday in a summer sun destination such as Salou, there must be plenty of entertainment throughout the day and night to provide them with a fun filled family holiday. There are both purpose built attractions and cultural and historical attractions in Salou.
Port Aventura is a theme park owned by Universal. It is a modern theme park based around the basis of five worlds, with rides to match the theme of each world. There are also daily shows, with up to 2 a day, and many restaurants and bars, to provide for the children and parents.
Salou has 2 waterparks : Aqualeon and Aquaopolis. Both are filled with pools and slides which would provide hours of entertainment for the two children. Aqualeon also has a zoo which would provide further entertainment and make a good family day out. Aquaopolis also provides entertainment for the whole family as they have their own special attractions and a games area for the family to enjoy together which includes mini golf, bumper boats and other games.
Watersports such as banana boats and windsurfing can be arranged at the main beach.
Barcelona is only an hour and a half away by motor vehicle. Excursions can be booked to visit the city. Barcelona has a range of sight seeing attractions such as the famous Sagrada Familia church and Las Ramblas promenade. On the way to Barcelona you will pass Montserrat which is a monastery up in the mountains.
Eating out
There are a wide range of restaurants in Salou to cater for everybodys tastes. Local food is mainly based on fish dishes, using fresh fish which has been caught in the local waters, there are also traditional Spanish dishes such as paella served. For the children who may not be keen on the Spanish or local dishes, there are still many restaurants serving british food. Eating out is also relatively cheap.
As the families holiday is self catering, they can enjoy different dining experiences every day.
