Salute America's Independence with a Flag Cake

Drew Bush
America has come a long way since it gained its independence in 1776. After all of the fighting between America and Britain, America gained its own identity. We got through the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and the Boston Tea Party. We abolished slavery and fought in two world wars. We even sent the first man to the moon and developed space technology far beyond anyone's imagination. Our founding fathers would be absolutely amazed at how much we have expanded technologically and politically. We've come so far since the creation of the light bulb and the phonograph. We have developed into a truly amazing nation. Now, 233 years later, we have sprawling cities, I Pods, flat screen television, amazing medical procedures, and so much more. Who knows where we will be another 233 years from now.

Families and friends get together and celebrate our country's independence and with the celebration come loads of good food. July Fourth does not have to be just about eating ribs, mashed potatoes, and beans. Why not have something sweet to tingle those taste buds after a nice barbecue? A Flag Cake will sure set those fireworks off in your mouth. The instructions are simple and best of all it is a very affordable dessert. One does not need to follow these instructions to a tee. If you like more strawberries or blueberries in your cake, feel free to add more.

Ingredients:
1) Fresh Strawberries (about 4 cups)
2) About 2 cups blueberries
3) 1 package of yellow or white cake mix (approximately 1 to 1.5 pounds). You can also make your own homemade mix.
4) Twelve ounces of Cool Whip Whipped Topping unfrozen (or more if you like).

First, slice up 1 cup of the strawberries and put these aside. Next, halve the remaining strawberries. Prepare the cake mix and pour into a 13X9 inch baking dish and bake using instructions on the package. Insert a toothpick to make sure it comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 10 minites and then throw on 1 cup of sliced strawberries and 1 cup of blueberries. Then throw on all of the whipped topping. Use the remaining strawberries and blueberries and place them on top of the whipped topping in a flag design. The strawberries will create the stripes and the blueberries will be the stars. Let chill in the refrigerator and serve. It makes about 15 servings. Happy Fouth of July!
