Saluting Blue Collar Workers: Seven Important Blue Collar-Level Jobs

Dragonfly
Many people would think that the size of importance of a human being is the job they do. Some folks truly believe that they are higher on the food chain than the blue collar worker. I wonder at what point that happened? I wonder when they stated believing that the executive world they live on could survive without all us little people.I am about to blow those ignorant folks out of the water with some food for thought.

With everything I list in the following statement, I want all the white collar folks to ponder the possibility of going with out the designated worker. Think about where you would be if that particular worker was not there. Service truly begins with blue collar employees. They know how hard it is to make ends meet and how creative they need to be to get through their life's journey.

Someone will probably say that I am picking on the "higher ups". Well for the most part, I have seen a whole lot of attitude from these people. The simplest delay in service or whatever they may be accustomed to can leave them in a real panty twist if you get my drift. Most of those folks are used to getting what they want, when they want it, where they want it, etc....It would be similar to a temper tantrum if you will.

So, all you higher ups who think you don't need us little people, I am here to prove you wrong. I will list some jobs and ask you a question or two about where you would be if we did not have someone in that position.

1..Garbage or Refuse Hauler-what would you do after you got done with those coffee grounds or empty baby diapers. Imagine if you will, letting it pile up in your condo. And better yet, let's believe it's 95 degrees that day.

2. Truck drivers. When you went to the Wal-mart or Target, or where ever it is that 'YOU' people shop, guess what, you can probably thank a truck driver for getting the items there. So if all the truck drivers decided to stay home for a day or so, how much stuff do you think would be on the shelves?

3. City workers-where do you think you would be if the sewers backed up and maybe you could not use the "facilities" till they were repaired? Imagine climbing down under the streets, into the bowels of the city to fix a clog, etc...

4.Car mechanics-----picture this, your Beamer is broke and you have to have it fixed, yesterday. That's the attitude of some folks and they think their importance should come before others. Imagine being under a car all day, fixing and diagnosing the problem. Most likely you would be lying on a very uncomfortable creeper or better yet, the hard, cold cement floor. Then the customer calls and once again asks," is it done yet"?

5. Waitresses/Waiters. This is a job I am pretty sure I could not do . It doesn't mean I am not capable, I just don't think I could take all the BS that customers dish out 24/7. Imagine if you took the order correctly, and served it in a timely fashion, along with the other ten tables you have to take care of, and there was a mistake that the customer decided to ream "you" out for. How do you think you would feel? A little tip for all you arrogant customers, ask the server how his/her day is going and be interested enough to listen.

6.Housekeeping/laundry service in a long term geriatric facility.---I am speaking from an area I know all about with this one. Yes, you may have considered us peons and non educated people at the time you placed your loved one in our facility. Did you ever stop to consider who"s with your loved one 24/7 when you are not able to be there. In affect, we "are" your extended family. We speak to your mom or dad and ask them how they are doing. We may get them a sweater or wipe a lonely tear when you are not there. We serve a very big role and it is just not one of mindless cleaning or laundry service. So my question to you is how would you like to show up for work, have a list of 10 plus people to assist and the call bells are going off, and maybe you might be told you are not working fast enough?

7. Paper Delivery people---when you are ready to check the stock report, you expect your paper to be there ,delivered at precisely the right time. You do realize that the paper delivery person also has to wait for someone to get the paper to him. Imagine finally getting the papers delivered and having to hear grumbling about it being late.

My entire point with this article if you have not figured it out as of now, is to never think that you, the higher-ups are any more important than the blue collar worker. We all work together and the world is not going to survive if we don't have a real appreciation for all employees. Another point to ponder, just because you are a higher up at this point, does not mean your collar color won't change at a later date.

  • The food chain has some distinctive faults.
  • Appreciate that person who is a part of your daily life.
We are all the same naked. Before we put our designated collar on, we really basically all need the same things.

Also DF, if you haven't seen it, you would LOVE the book "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich, in which she goes out and tries to work these various jobs. The following expression may be overused, but every citizen should read this book.

Dragonfly, this is my favorite article on AC yet. Why were you so modest; you KNOW nurse's aide or caregiver should have been on there! We just found a good bootleg mechanic and altho we try to pay more than he asks (without insulting him like it's charity) he has already saved us hundreds. .... On the flip side, one example, there's a lawyer who advises our City Council. He usually meets with them at the close of their meetings. He will show up an hour or two early, and get $115 per hour for sitting and waiting. Then he makes sure to SLOWLY settle any pertinent matters, taking months or years, or otherwise he shuts off his own gravy train. He gets $115 an hour, people doing the important things get $7 .... If there somehow is an afterlife, I don't want to be in it unless the last are truly first. -- Mike. (P.S., Keep Writing)

Snotty higher-ups are low on the humanity scale. People who have struggled to reach a higher position appreciate the work of blue collar workers.
