Samsung Announces Jet S8000; Smarter Than a SmartPhone?

Bob Smith
Samsung has announced its new smart phone today at the "Samsung Unpacked" event at London as well as the CommunicAsia 2009 and events at Dubai.

Despite being featured on all the promotional releases nobody as of yet is actually sure why this smart phone is smarter than any other smart phone. Its thinner. Does that count?

The Jet does however pack quite a punch, featuring the 800 MHz Samsung 6410 that started life in the Asus P565.

At this point you may be asking yourself, "Why does that central button look like a cube?" Well spotted. This central cube button has taken precedence on quite a few of the phones (such as the Omnia II and the M8000) Samsung has released at Samsung Unpacked.

They are all part of what Samsung has called their "Cubic Project". The cube shaped central button when pressed launches a cube shaped interface (not to be confused with the seriously laggy touch flo cube that HTC used on the touch cruise)

We will be interested to see how this interface works as I was not impressed with HTC's touch flo interface.

The Jet features the TouchWiz 2.0 widget based user interface. A widget is basically a small piece of code created with one specific purpose. That code is represented usually on a dashboard by a block, that block can then be moved to wherever is most convenient for the user. This gives the user complete free choice to customise exactly how their user interface works dependant on how they use their phone without having to touch any code.

The Jet also features a Motion UI that allows you to flip, tilt, tap, flop, splat, bumb and blast the phone to your heart's content (ok maybe not those last few).

The Jet also features what they are calling Smart Unlock which is a feature that I really like the idea of. You can unlock the phone and open your necessary application or call somebody in one fell swoop by simply swiping your finger across the touchscreen tracing the relevant letter of the alphabet.

Along with this the Jet features a 5.0 Megapixel camera with face detection, AM-OLED Screen, Support for almost all audio and video file types, either 2GB or 8GB storage expandable to 16GB and over 400 hours standby time.

The Samsung Jet S8000 should be on sale later this year.
