Samsung Central Station

Wirelessly Connect a Laptop to an HD Monitor Docking Station

Matt Schirano

The Samsung Central Station is yet another product which integrates wireless technology into familiar devices. In this case it is the combination of a monitor, wireless hub, and docking station. The Central Station is part HD monitor (23" and 27" models available), part wireless docking station, all useful. Use it to wirelessly connect your laptop to a monitor, 4 USB ports, and 1 HDMI port. Wired versions are also available, but are not nearly as cool. The monitor is a LED-backlit full 1080p HD display. Watch movies in full 1080p! Most laptops do not have this high of resolution, so if you're looking for peak performance the Samsung Central Station gives you that ability.

In essence the Samsung Central Station gives you expanded desktop workspace without sacrificing the portability of your laptop. All you need is an open USB port on your laptop to plug the special USB wireless adapter into. This adapter comes with the Samsung Central Station so don't worry about being tricked into buying mandatory accessories after the fact. There is a one-time installation of Central Station software which allows the USB wireless adapter to work with the Central Station. Once this is done you're good to go! The software runs in the background of your computer so when the adapter is plugged in and you walk within range of the Samsung Central Station, your laptop automatically connects to the monitor and any devices plugged into the USB ports.

If you have a Mac and are worried if it's compatible don't sweat it. The Samsung Central Station is compatible with all laptop and desktop computers whether a PC or a Mac. This is unlike most docking stations, which are PC or Mac specific, and sometimes are usable only by a specific manufacturer. This further enhances the usefulness of the Central Station because you can install the software on multiple computers and leave the adapter nearby so whoever needs it can use it. And since there are probably going to be multiple people using the station, the monitor is on a dual-hinge height-adjuster that lets you raise or lower the display to a convenient viewing angle. The professional model, which is available if you search hard enough, has a full-range height-adjustment so you don't have to just go up and down. Left and right is also an option.

Think of it as a dedicated hub for all your handheld devices. Leave the chargers for your most frequently used devices plugged in so when you come home from work, the gym, or wherever, you can just plug them in and charge them! This is possible because there are USB 3.0 ports on the Samsung Central Station which charge devices while the station is powered down. One last nifty feature worth mentioning is the ability to rout audio from your PC to desktop speakers.
