Samsung SyncMaster Monitor Review

John Barnett
There are three common components to every computer. There's the keyboard, the CPU, and the monitor. The mouse doesn't quite make the cut when it comes to the three top spots. It breaks down like this. You want your computer to be fast, that's the CPU's job. You want to comfortably enter data, that's up to the keyboard. If you want a nice view into cyberspace, the monitor is your man. However many take for granted the importance of the screen and all it does for its owner. In walks to the Samsung SyncMaster Monitor to remind you of what a good screen is capable of.

Samsung's SyncMaster Monitor immediately impresses with its sharp design and tasteful finish. Looking at its screen, sides, and back make you want to reach out and feel the smoothness of it. Speaking of smooth, that's exactly how best you can describe the picture quality. In order to properly test the SyncMaster Monitor, I decided to utilize three different programs with my eMachine and the SM. A video game was tested, a streaming video site, and a DVD.

The Sims 3

The first test subject, the disc-based latest iteration of the Sims franchise, loaded up with vibrant color glory on the Samsung SyncMaster. The loading screen gem was sharp and nicely depicted- easily outdoing my Dell monitor in quality. When the game was finished loading, I found that the Sims themselves were bettered rendered with less blurred effects and more consistent animations. The homes and furniture looked more appealing and the special effects looked much more lively. The higher quality of the Samsung SyncMaster might be less apparent with older games, but for the Sims 3, it was an obvious success.

Pulp Fiction

As I started up a DVD I discovered something of a flaw with the monitor. While testing out some of the screen tweaking options, I found them to be a bit user unfriendly. While expansive in options, it was the sort of hassle that many will forgo in favor of the default settings. This does cause you to miss a few of the SyncMaster's bells and whistles, but it doesn't hurt too much. With my setting saved I hit play on Pulp Fiction. One of my favorite movies of all time it looked crisp and clean! Thanks, Samsung!

Netflix

The final test came with Netflix. After watching Pulp Fiction, I decided to view a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode on the SyncMaster monitor- in this case, MST3K: The Horrors of Spider Island. The movie itself, naturally, was terrible, but the quality was superb. It wasn't the most colorful episode, but it did show off the sharpness and texture quality offered by Samsung's SyncMaster. Overall, if you have the extra money and would love to see the quality of your PC visuals improved, the SyncMaster monitor is a good choice.
