Today, San Antonio's economy is widely diversified, presenting job opportunities to people in any number of fields. Its biggest sectors today are financial services, health care, government and tourism. San Antonio has one of the largest military concentrations in the country as well; the city's defense industry employs almost 90,000 people in many different fields and adds more $5.25 billion to the economy every year. Five Fortune 500 companies have a major presence in San Antonio, with two of them holding their headquarters there. Valero Energy, Tesoro, USAA, Clear Channel Communications and NuStar energy are all among the nation's top employers and they provide thousands of jobs to the San Antonio area.
The South Texas Medical Center is located just northwest of the city center and is a sizable economic force in the region. The South Texas Medical Center is a conglomeration of hospitals, clinics and higher education institutes. The center also includes the Southwest Research Institute, an important center that employs thousands of scientists and researchers.
Considering this concentration and conglomeration of medical and research institute, it should come as no surprise that registered nurse is the most popular career choice in the entire city. There are well over 14,000 men and women working as nurses in the city's hospital and clinics, many of which received their education in the city's colleges and universities. On average, a nurse in San Antonio earns about $60,000 a year with salaries for experienced and educated nurses climbing up to $80,000. Most nurses choose to begin their careers with a two-year associate's degree program, while many other choose instead to begin in a bachelor's degree program, paving the way for higher earning potential after graduation.
Some of the most lucrative careers in the city are in the medical field. In fact, seven of the top ten highest-paying careers in the entire city are in medicine. From dentist to pediatrician and everything in between, a doctor in San Antonio can expect to earn well over $200,000 a year.
With the high number of major corporations based in the San Antonio area, it seems obvious that there would be thousands upon thousands of employment opportunities in the corporate sector. The field of sales is one of the most prominent and essential department in any company or office building. All combined, there are about 9,400 sales representatives working in San Antonio each and every business day.
General wholesale and manufacturing salesmen are the most popular, with about 7,700 of them working in the city's many corporate offices. On average, these salesmen earn about $53,000 a year. That figure gives little indication of the $100,000 a talented and well-educated salesman can expect to earn if he really dedicates himself, though. There are roughly 1,700 technical and scientific salesmen and they are slightly better paid than their general counterparts. These salesmen earn an average salary of about $69,000 a year with salaries extending up to $125,000 for experienced and driven salesmen.
Accountants and auditors are another essential part of San Antonio's corporate puzzle. There are over 6,000 of these employees working in the city, each one earning an average salary of about $58,000 a year. Management analysts, too, are necessary part of a company's structure. There are 2,600 management analysts working in San Antonio, earning an average of about $62,000 annually.
