St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) is a national holiday in Ireland. St. Patrick was a British missionary to Ireland in the fifth-century. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, a group of Irish raiders took 16 year old Patrick prisoner while attacking his family's estate. He spent six years in captivity as a slave in Ireland and then escaped. Patrick became a priest and later returned to Ireland as a missionary. He converted many of the pagans to Christianity and established monasteries, churches, and schools in the country. Saint Patrick is believed to have died on March 17th in 461 AD.
