When it comes to popularity with the San Diego Comic-Con crowd, few celebrities generate as much excitement as Mark Hamill. When doing interviews with Fox Home Entertainment or in the Adult Swim Press Room, Hamill's name comes up in conversation more than once.
On Friday evening during Comic-Con, Hamill participated in a panel discussion with his co-stars about "Sushi Girl," a film that Hamill is very passionate about. The movie tells the story of a group of robbers that reunite over a sushi dinner served on the body of a beautiful woman.
Sitting down for a face-to-face interview at the San Diego Convention Center, Hamill says that among the characters, there is no overlap. "No other character is like mine, and vice-versa. Everybody inhabits their own niche and like I say, it's a nice blend of diverse types," Hamill said. "Crow, my character, he is what he is. But it was so outrageous to me."
Hamill said that while reading the script for "Sushi Girl," it was not always easy to tell how something was going to be handled. "I didn't know Kern (director Kern Saxton) all that well, so it was a real leap of faith to say 'Well, we should do this.' You don't want to get into the third or fourth day of shooting and say 'Oh God, this is not the way I thought it should be,'" he said.
Luckily for him, Hamill said, it turned out perfectly well. "It's grim and it's hard-edged, but not to the point where you are nauseated by it. I think it makes violence look the way it is, which is very ugly. Instead of glamorizing them and making it romantic like the 'Godfather' films, which I love, it makes them (criminals) look like ignorant thugs, which is what they are," he said.
Hamill said that "Sushi Girl" also is very different from the scripts normally offered to him. "For that reason alone, I thought that if they had the confidence in me that I could do it, I should try it," he said.
Hamill also will be featured in one episode of "NTSF: SD: SUV," Paul Scheer's new 15-minute comedy series on Adult Swim. No stranger to voice-over work, Hamill provides the voice for a serial killer dolphin.
"Thank God for mass communication and the new media because they were able to e-mail me that segment. I was able to watch the whole segment, including the dolphin and the scratch track. Without even meeting them, I said I would love to do this. I went in and spent maybe an hour and ten minutes (recording)," he said. "It was a lot of fun to do that; very Hannibal Lecter-y."
Down on the convention floor, Fox Home Entertainment has a display devoted to the upcoming Blu-ray release of the entire "Star Wars" saga. "They (the 'Star Wars' movies) have taken on a life of their own way beyond anything I can contribute," he said. "We didn't have to do anything for the 'Special Editions.' We didn't have to come in and loop (dialogue). We didn't have to do anything; he (George Lucas) did those completely without us."
"You have to shrug at some point and say that they are George's to do with as he sees fit. If he wants to do 3-D, if he want to do Smell-o-Vision (there's nothing like the smell of a wet Wookie), he can do whatever he likes," Hamill said. "But I am always for the underdog, the little guy."
Calling "Sushi Girl" a little film, Hamill said that he, the director and the other cast members will have to nurture it. "That's why I am working so hard at the convention for it. Obviously, I was down here for 'Arkham City,' but it really doesn't need the promotional push from me; people are going to buy it anyway," Hamill said.
"This ('Sushi Girl') is the one that really needs to get the word spread about it. We've got to show it to people that love movies and help them get the word out," he said.
